Marlian music boss, Naira Marley and Zlatan’s “Am I a Yahoo Boy” became a Nigerian phenomenon surrounded by controversy upon release on the 3rd of May 2019.
The song itself is catchy, as Naira Marley and Zlatan exchange verses over an Afrobeats rhythm produced by Rexxie.
“Am I a Yahoo Boy” is an extravagant song that asks if Naira Marley and Zlatan are, in fact, “Yahoo boys”, aka internet fraudsters, with both musicians casually dismissing the accusation.
Nearly a day after the song and video got released, the duo were picked up by EFCC on charges relating to cybercrime.
The arrest led to confusion on whether the song was dropped in anticipation of an arrest or if the government was simply just repressing on music that can be perceived as a glorification of crime.
