On this day in 1982, the first emoji/emoticons were used digitally by Scott Fahlman.
Computer scientist Scott Fahlman wrote a proposal to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, stating that emoticon should be used to express emotions.

Scott Fahlman was the first documented person to use the emoticons 🙂 and 🙁 .The text of his original proposal was recovered 20 years later by Jeff Baird from old backup tapes.

Within a few months, it had spread to the ARPANET and Usenet, and many variations on the theme were immediately suggested by Scott and others including David Touretzky, Guy Steele, and Jaime Carbonell.
