Olivia Rodrigo breaks multiple records with debut album ‘Sour’

Olivia Rodrigo‘s introduction to music has been a stellar one thus far smashing records as she continues her impressive form. She started off with her debut single, “Driver’s License” and has moved up ever its release.

She’s also captured the biggest week of 2021 for an album, as “Sour”, her debut release opens at the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s 200 charts after earning 295,000 equivalent album units in the U.S (according to MRC Data) in the week ending 27 May.

Olivia’s “Sour” also launched with the second-largest streaming week ever for a non-R&B/hip-hop album and also the second-biggest for an album of any genre by a female act.

The debut album by the singer-songwriter and actress joins the duo of “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U” in earning the No. 1 spot.

Of Sour’s 295,000 equivalent album units earned in the tracking week ending 27 May, album sales comprise 72,000 thus making it the top-selling album of the week.

Olivia Rodrigo released her debut album, “Sour” on 21 May 2021 and it’s proven a top album with an impressive debut run.

Records smashed by Olivia Rodrigo with ‘Sour’

Sour surpasses 2021’s previous biggest week by Taylor Swift’s Fearless “Taylor’s Version” (291,000 units), opening with 295,000 units to earn Olivia Rodrigo the biggest week of 2021 for an album.

Sour also captures the largest week, by units, for an act’s debut charting effort, beating Cardi B’s debut studio set, and first Billboard 200 entry, Invasion of Privacy, which opened at No. 1 on April 21, 2018 chart with 255,000 units. This is calculated from when the Billboard 200 transitioned from an album sales only ranking to an equivalent album units-based chart.

Olivia Rodrigo also makes her mark as the first woman to see her debut charting album open at No. 1 since Invasion of Privacy by Cardi B.

Sour also started with 218,000 SEA units marking the second-largest streaming week for both a non-R&B/hip-hop album and second-biggest for an album by a woman of any genre.

Sour has just 11 tracks in total making it the shortest No. 1 album, by track count, since BTS’ “Be” (eight-track ) debuted at No. 1 on 5 December 2020.
