Mark Wahlberg and other Hollywood actors who changed their bodies for a movie role

American actor and producer Mark Wahlberg is the latest movie star who had to go through a drastic body change in order to fit into a role for a movie.

Earlier in April, Mark revealed during his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that he plans to gain additional pounds for the role of a fighter-turned-priest in an upcoming movie and some hours ago, he showed off his new look.

Mark is usually renowned as the guy with bulging biceps and chiseled abs, however, the 49-year-old had to ditch his strict fitness regimen for a role in an upcoming movie.

Mark Wahlberg posted a photo on his Instagram claiming he has already gained about 20 pounds and is headed to add another 20.

The post received various comments with his wife making a cheeky one claiming Mark looks just as hot in person.

Over the years, actors have had to make drastic changes to their bodies in order to fit into a particular movie role and Mark certainly won’t be the last of them.

Let’s take a look at other Hollywood stars who had to do the same for a role in a movie.

Michael B. Jordan

For his role as a boxer in Creed II, Michael B. Jordan who co-starred in Marvel’s Black Panther had to gain over 30 pounds of muscle mass.

This was to make his transformation from a rookie-turned-professional boxer in the movie look more realistic.

50 Cent

The rapper and actor has always spotted a ripped look but he shocked everyone back in 2011 with a photo of himself looking rather slender and frail.

He reportedly lost over 54 pounds in about nine weeks as he went from 214 to 160 pounds just to play a football player diagnosed with cancer in All Things Fall Apart.

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway is also one of the movie stars who had to go through drastic body change to fit into a role and hers won her an Oscar award.

She played the role of Fantine in Les Misérables in 2012 and the actress had to lose 25 pounds to play the French seamstress turned desperate prostitute.

She later opened up about how it negatively affected her health.

Joaquin Phoenix

For his role as the Joker in DC’s 2019 movie, Joker, Joaquin Phoenix had to go through a body transformation and acting deserving of an Oscar award which he did win.

The Oscar winner had to lose over 52 pounds to fit into the role properly.

Jake Gyllenhaal

For the 2014 movie Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhaal lost 30 pounds for his role in the creepy movie that raked in over $38 million at the box office just a month after it opened in theatres.

Gyllenhaal played a career-hungry young man who stumbles upon the underground world of L.A. freelance crime photojournalism in the film.

Rooney Mara

Mara did not only have to go through weight loss for her role in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, she even had her hair chopped and had her eyebrow, nose, lip, and other not-so-visible body parts pierced.

Christian Bale

One of the actors who seem no stranger to morphing into roles in movies is Christian Bale.

He had to shed more than 60 pounds for his role in The Machinist back in 2014.

He also gained 40 pounds for his roles in American Hustle and Vice respectively. And for the movie Ford v Ferrari, he lost 70 pounds.

Tom Hardy

Another Hollywood actor who isn’t a stranger to body transformations for roles in movies is Tom Hardy.

Throughout his career, the Academy Award-nominated actor has often times  had to add or shed a few pounds.

In order to play a mixed martial arts fighter in Warrior and the criminal in Bronson, he was required to add a few slabs of muscle but nothing compares to the effort he put up to play Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.
