Depp sued UK newspaper The Sun for publishing an article by Dan Wootton that called the actor a wife-beater. The story also criticised J.K. Rowling for allowing Depp to star in the Fantastic Beasts franchise despite knowing of his alleged behaviour. The evidence of his innocence will reportedly be used in his case against the newspaper.
In a statement to E! News, the actor’s attorney, Adam Waldman, reveals they “filed a partial list of evidence that (they) will use to disprove the fraudulent underlying allegations against Mr Depp.”
Included in the filing were references to “dozens of video security tapes,” as well as “eyewitness statements, newly discovered sworn affidavits and deposition transcripts from 2016, and text messages between the Sun and their #metoo source.”
Waldman adds: “We continue to take profound witness statements in this matter.”
The lawsuit references an alleged fight in May 2016 between Heard and Depp where the actor is alleged to have thrown a glass at his then wife. Witnesses said they never saw any bruises on Heard until six days after the alleged wife-beating.
According to People, Depp is suing The Sun for “£200,000 pounds in addition to £10,528 in legal fees, as well damages to be assessed by the court.” He is also seeking an injunction that will prohibit the paper from “continuing to publish” allegations of spousal abuse.
In addition, there is also allegedly a video recorded by a security camera, which is said to show Heard without any signs of abuse.
