2020 Coachella cancelled, no thanks to COVID-19 pandemic

The 2020 edition of Coachella and its sister festival, Stagecoach has been cancelled, no thanks to COVID-19.

On Wednesday, 10 June, public health officer, Dr Cameron Kaiser announced that because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the music festivals will not be able to take place in October as planned.

“I am concerned as indications grow that COVID-19 could worsen in the fall,” Kaiser said on Wednesday.

“In addition, events like Coachella and Stagecoach would fall under Governor Newsom’s Stage 4, which he has previously stated would require treatments or a vaccine to enter. Given the projected circumstances and potential, I would not be comfortable moving forward.”

Coachella 2020, whose headlines included Travis Scott, Frank Ocean, and Lady Gaga, had already started moving 2020 acts to 2021, as if they knew that the festival would be cancelled.

This is quite disappointing as Nigerian singer, Seun Kuti was set to perform at this year’s Coachella festival. He was the only Nigerian announced on this year’s lineup and had taken to Instagram to share his excitement, writing:

“Coachella 2020 announced and We are going going back back to Cali Cali!!”
