Weekend watchlist: must watch movies and TV series debuting this weekend

Old, Snake Eyes, Master of the Universe, Trollhunters: Rise of The Titans, Midnight in the Switchgrass, Joe Bell, Ted Lasso Season 2, The Last Letter from Your Lover, Jolt, Blood Red Sky, new films and television series to watch this weekend.

What will you be doing this weekend? Cooling off I presume. If film or TV is your cup of tea, here is a rich, warm offering. Just like every weekend, there is a buffet of new films and series both on the big screen and across all streaming platforms to feast from.

My job here is to save you the stress of searching online for what films to watch in the course of the weekend. Keep reading to see a fine compilation of fresh off the oven contents to treat yourself to, either in the comfort of your home, or in the dark and quiet screen room of the cinema.

1. Old

“Old” is an American supernatural horror-thriller film written, directed, and produced by M. Night Shyamalan. The Swiss graphic novel “Sandcastle” by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters inspired the film. It follows a family on a tropical vacation who discovers that the secluded beach they are relaxing on for a few hours is somehow causing them to age rapidly, reducing their entire lives into a single day. This one gives me the creeps! “Old” comes out in theatres across the US on 23 July 2021.

2. Snake Eyes

A mysterious lone fighter, known only as Snake Eyes, is welcomed into and trained by an ancient Japanese ninja clan called the Arashikage. He finds his loyalties being tested when secrets from his past are revealed, as he eventually goes on the path to become the heroic operative of the organisation G.I. Joe. “Snake Eyes” stars Henry Golding, with Andrew Koji, Úrsula Corberó, Samara Weaving, and Iko Uwais in supporting roles. It premieres in cinemas today both in the US and other countries.

3. Trollhunters: Rise of The Titans

“Trollhunters” is an American computer-animated science fantasy film. It is the conclusion of the Tales of Arcadia franchise by Guillermo del Toro. “Following a year after the events of Wizards, the Guardians of Arcadia must reunite for the final time as they must battle the nefarious Arcane Order, who have reawakened the primordial Titans,” the film synopsis reads. It debuts on Netflix today, and it is the perfect entertainment for lovers of animation.

4. Masters of The Universe

“Masters of the Universe: Revelation” is an upcoming American animated superhero fantasy streaming television series. The series focuses on the unresolved storylines of the original 1983 TV series, picking up many of the characters’ journeys where they left off. It will be released in two parts, with the first debuting on Netflix today.

5. Midnight in the Switchgrass

“Midnight in the Switchgrass” is an American crime thriller film directed by Randall Emmett, and based on the true story of Texas’ most dangerous serial killer. Here is the synopsis to get you intrigued:

“FBI agent Karl Helter and his partner Rebecca Lombardi are very close to busting a sex-trafficking ring. When they realize their investigation has crossed the path of a brutal serial killer, they team up with Florida Department of Law Enforcement agent Byron Crawford who has years on this case.”

“Midnight in the Switchgrass” stars Megan Fox and Bruce Willis in lead roles and it debuts in cinemas across the US today.

6. Joe Bell

If you are a fan of Biographical dramas, this one is for you. Joe Bell is an American biographical drama road film that follows the true story of a father and his gay son who set out to bond while walking across the country. The film had its world premiere at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival on 14 September 2020, and is scheduled to be released in the United States today 23 July. Mark Wahlberg stars as Joe Bell, while Reid Miller plays his son, Jadin Bell.

7. Jolt

“Jolt” is an upcoming American action comedy film, directed by Tanya Wexler. It follows the story of a bouncer with an anger-management problem, who goes on a revenge-fueled rampage after the murder of a friend. The film debuts on Amazon Prime Video today. It stars Kate Beckinsale, Laverne Cox, and Lili Rich among others.

8. Ted Lasso (Season 2 premiere)

“Ted Lasso” is an American comedy streaming television series developed by Bill Lawrence, Jason Sudeikis, Joe Kelly, and Brendan Hunt. It follows the story of Ted Lasso, a coach of college-level American football who is unexpectedly recruited to coach an English Premier League team, AFC Richmond, despite having no experience in association football.

This one is a perfect flick for weekend relaxation, with its comedic and hardly serious theme. If you have not already seen the first season, it is a perfect time to binge-watch it as the second season debuts on Apple TV today.

9. The Last Letter from Your Lover

“The Last Letter from Your Lover” is a British romantic drama film based on Jojo Moyes’ 2012 novel of the same name. It follows Ellie Haworth (Felicity Jones), an ambitious journalist who discovers a trove of secret love letters from 1965 and becomes determined to solve the mystery of the forbidden affair at their centre.

The film stars Shailene Woodley, Felicity Jones, Pete Czernin, Callum Turner, and Joe Alwyn. It is just the perfect thing for hopeless romantics like me. The last letter from your lover debuts on Netflix today and you can enjoy it all cuddled up in bed with your lover.

10. Blood Red Sky

And now for more horror! “Blood Red Sky” is an action horror film directed by Peter Thorwarth. A woman with a mysterious illness is travelling with her son to the United States when a group of terrorists hijack her transatlantic flight. When her son’s life is put in danger, her only chance of saving him forces her to reveal her true nature and unleash the inner monster she has fought so hard to hide. This one stars Dominic Purcell from “Prison Break” alongside Roland Møller, Peri Baumeister, and Chidi Ajufo among others. “Blood Red Sky” flames up on Netflix this weekend on 24 July 2021.
