All characters, cast and powers of Marvel ETERNALS explained!

See all the powers, cast and characters of the Marvel Eternals film, coming out on 5 November 2021 – Angelina Jolie, Kit Harrington, Gemma Chan, …

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a gift that keeps giving, and the well anticipated Fourth Phase is essentially upon us. Who doesn’t like superheroes? For Marvel fans, there has never been anything more exhilaratingly fun and enjoyable like the Avenger series, which saw a coming together of superheroes to fight evil. And with that storyline pretty much laid to rest in Endgame, Marvel’s Eternals has picked up the baton.

Come November 2021, fans will be introduced to a new set of superheroes on the big screen. As described by Wiki, the film is based on the Marvel Comics race of the same name. It is intended to be the 26th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In the film, an immortal alien race emerges from hiding after thousands of years to protect Earth from its evil counterparts, the Deviants.

The events of the film are set in a post Avengers: Endgame era, when an unexpected tragedy forces the Eternals out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s most ancient enemy. It is directed by Chloé Zhao, who recently bagged two Oscars for her masterpiece, Nomadland. So, you might wonder, what’s the big deal about this film? Why should we be excited about it?

Keep reading. You just might get the answers you seek, as we take a look at important details of the film, such as who is in it, more on the superheroes, and what they can do.

Cast of Eternals

Perhaps, the most striking and fascinating thing about the upcoming film is its star-studded cast. Kudos to the producers; they know just how to work the audience’s emotions. They brought together a host of cherished actors to assume the roles of these new on-screen superheroes. It stars an ensemble cast including Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Harish Patel, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie.

Eternals characters and superpowers

Sersi, portrayed by Gemma Chan

She is an empathetic Eternal with a strong connection to humans and the Earth. Sersi’s superpower is the ability to manipulate inanimate matter. She has been in love with Ikaris for centuries and has a strong connection with Sprite. She poses as a museum curator on Earth while dating Dane Whitman.

Speaking about her character, Chan said: “She’s interesting because she is this immortal being, but she’s very grounded as well.” “She’s a little bit of a free spirit and just loves being amongst humans,” Gemma added.

Ikaris, portrayed by Richard Madden

Ikaris is one of the most powerful Eternals, with the ability to fly and shoot beams of light from his eyes. He has a special connection with Sersi, but they don’t necessarily see eye-to-eye on their approach toward humanity. They have a complicated, on-again-off-again relationship that’s stretched throughout the centuries. Speaking on the relationship between Ikaris and Sersi, Madden said that they have “a deep level of romance” and “are two opposing sides of how they connect with the world”.

Madden also said he had to find a way to play the role of Ikaris in a way that he didn’t appear to be bored of everything due to how long he’d lived.

Kingo, portrayed by Kumail Nanjiani

He is an Eternal who has the ability to project cosmic energy projectiles from his hands. Kingo became a popular Bollywood film star to blend in on Earth, and by so doing, became rather famous, as opposed to the low profile his other mates preferred. Nanjiani trained extensively to get in superhero shape, and to capture Kingo’s joyful, effortless fight style, he went back and watched old Errol Flynn movies and some of the original Zorro films.

Kingo had to perform a big Bollywood dance routine, and this, according to Kumail, was the most challenging part of the project for him. “I’m not a dancer,” says Kumail while speaking about the film. “I have zero rhythm. I had to take months and months of classes to do this. So it was very challenging, but I know that if we could pull this off and capture the joy and excitement of a Bollywood dance number in a Marvel movie, that would be special — because I grew up watching Bollywood movies. I knew every Bollywood movie until like the late ’90s. So to be able to do an homage to the genre of movies that I loved and grew up watching was really special.”

Sprite, portrayed by Lia McHugh

An Eternal who can project lifelike illusions, Sprite has the physical appearance of a 12-year-old child, but of course, like the others, she has lived for thousands of years. McHugh called her an “old soul”.

Speaking on the role, Lia said she could sort of relate to Sprite as hers was similar to the way she had lived her whole life. She added that she looks younger than she actually is. “I really related to her in that way and in wanting to grow up a little bit, but being stuck in a way,” Lia said.

Phastos, portrayed by Brian Tyree Henry

Phastos is an Eternal and an intelligent weapons and technology inventor. He is the first superhero to be depicted as gay in an MCU film. Brian, who can’t believe his luck, says he never imagined he would be a part of the MCU.

“I have always been a huge fan. I’ve been obsessed with the concept of superheroes and the concept of mankind needing saving. And I think that when you get these group of people together, who just have these intimate senses of super powers and saving humanity, it’s something that we all kind of need. It literally brings everyone together regardless of where you’re from. I’m still freaking out that I’m a part of it,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

Makkari portrayed by Lauren Ridloff

To play the super-fast Eternal Makkari, Ridloff went into training. She had to do weight lifting and work on her legs as the goal was to achieve an athletic body.

The character is also notably the first deaf superhero in the MCU. Speaking on this, Lauren said: “They’re offering a way for us to hope, to be able to get up and keep going and fight for what’s important. More and more people are starting to see themselves in that universe, and that’s powerful.”

Druig, portrayed by Barry Keoghan

Druig is an aloof Eternal who has the ability to manipulate the minds of others. As evident in his recounting of the project, Brian seems to have enjoyed the experience altogether. He spoke about how the costume transforms you and makes you feel entirely different almost immediately.

Co-star Salma Hayek also spoke about how nervous Brian seemed initially. He, in fact, declared he might not be able to do it after his first attempt at running his lines with Salma. According to her, however, everything changed all of a sudden when the time came to perform. In her words, “It was like possession, and he’d get it in one take, pure brilliance.”

Gilgamesh, portrayed by Don Lee

Gilgamesh is the strongest Eternal. He has a deep connection to Thena. He mainly fought with his fists and could knock people out with just a punch. Speaking about the character, Lee said: “He’s protective over his family and humans, and he has a solid, dependable character that serves his team in battles. At the same time, he’s a funny guy and has a sense of humor.”

Because Lee himself has been a boxer for over three decades, the role fit him perfectly as he could use real boxing moves. Lee is positive that the role will be an inspiration to Korean kids who love the superhero genre.

Ajak, portrayed by Salma Hayek

Ajak is the wise and spiritual leader of the Eternals, who has the ability to heal and is the “bridge” between the Eternals and the Celestials. Changing the character from a man in the comics allowed Hayek to lean into Ajak’s femininity and make her the “mother figure” of the Eternals. The actress was initially hesitant to work with Marvel, assuming she would have a supporting or “grandmother” role.

Thena portrayed by Angelina Jolie

She is an elite warrior Eternal who can form any weapon out of cosmic energy. Over the centuries, she develops a close bond with Gilgamesh. Jolie trained with various swords, spears, and staffs for the role, as well as taking ballet. “It’s certainly the biggest thing I’ve ever done,” Jolie says, speaking about the project.

“It is one of the weirdest things to train for because you’re throwing things, grabbing things, breaking things in half,” she further explains. “You feel a little nuts. You’re just throwing your hand out as if you’re thinking, ‘Is that a sword? Is that a spear? Is it a lasso? What am I doing?’ Then you get into it and it gets really fun, but it’s a puzzle.”

Kit Harrington also stars, but not as an Eternal. He portrays Dane Whitman, a human who works at the Natural History Museum in London and is dating Sersi.
