Lately, there has been an increase in the number of Nollywood Movies streaming on Netflix. Movies like Alter EgoKambili: The Whole 30 Yards, and others have made it to the platform, and many more are on their way.

Netflix, an American multinational entertainment company that was founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph, has a wide variety of content that includes but is not limited to movies, TV shows, documentaries, children’s programming, original films, and series.

Slowly, Netflix is changing the narrative of how movies are being seen around the globe, and, of course, Nollywood Movies are not left out. In this article, see the top 10 Nollywood latest movies on Netflix in 2021.

1. Alter Ego

Nollywood Movie Alter Ego is about a woman, Ada Igwe (played by Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde) — a respected and feared human rights lawyer who is a child rights activist and an advocate for women. Ada is bent on prosecuting sex offenders, especially pedophiles, but she has a flip side — a passion for carnal pleasures, which is her toughest battle and alter ego.

The film, which was first produced in 2017, stars Nollywood veterans such as Omotola Jalade, Wale Ojo, Jide Kosoko, and Tinsel’s Kunle Remi. Ada Igwe doesn’t only rely on the law to exert its cause on offenders, as she also uses unorthodox methods to make sure those she finds guilty of child molestation and sex offenses pay for their crimes.

Alter Ego starts streaming on Netflix on Saturday, 13 November 2021.

2. Kambili: The Whole 30 Yards

The movie is about a young lady, Kambili Maduka, who intends to get married before she turns 30. Her character is an irresponsible, spoiled, spendthrift 28-year-old woman who is turning 29 in a few days.

However, she has a rethink of her approach to life after getting suspended from work because of her incessant lateness. Then her boyfriend breaks up with her, dashing her hopes of getting married before 30. So, she decides that what she needs to do is prove to her boyfriend that she can be everything he wants her to be, which is; responsible, driven, focused, and wife material.

This lovely movie that stars Nancy Isime, Venita Akpofure, Jide Kene Achufusi, and other brilliant actors.

3. The Set-up

The Set-Up is a Nigerian crime film directed by Niyi Akinmolayan and written by Chinaza Onuzo. The film stars characters such as Dakore Egbuson-Akande, Kehinde Bankole, Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Jim Iyke, Tina Mba, Joke Silva, Ayoola Ayolola and Uzor Arukwe.

It premiered in Nigerian theatres on 9 August 2019; and debuted on Netflix on 22 April 2020. The movie is about a former drug smuggler and a confident artist who gets more than she bargained for when a down-on-his-luck businessman hires her to assist with his scheme to marry a wealthy heiress.

4. God-calling

Directed and written by Bodurin Sasore, God Call is a 2018 Nigerian drama film about a young woman traumatized after losing her daughter in a fire that caused her to kill herself but got saved by God’s intervention. It stars Zainab Balogun, Eku Edewor, Richard Mofe Damijo, Shaffy Bello, Tina Mba, Nkem Owoh, and Onyeka Onwenu, among others. The theatrical edition debuted on 21 December 2020.

5. Brother Jekwu

You’d love Brother Jekwu if you’re into comedy dramas. This one talks about a village hustler who was determined to make it big. It is also another latest Nollywood movie 2021 on Netflix that started streaming in August 2021. It stars Mike Ezuruonye, Angela Okorie among others.

6. Day of Destiny

This talks about two brothers who seized an opportunity to travel 20 years back in time. It was released on 1st January 2021 and started streaming on Netflix in July 2021. Akay Mason and Abosi Ogba both directed Day of Destiny, a one-of-a-kind Nollywood film.

7. Quam’s money

Quam’s Money is also a star-studded movie starring Folarin “Falz” Falana as the lead actor with support from others like Toni Tones, Jemima Osunde, and Nse Ikpe-Etim. Inkblot Productions produced the movie and it started streaming in August 2021.

8. Unroyal

Here’s a story of a king’s daughter who treated other people poorly and without regard, but got a chance to be better. Unroyal was directed by Moses Inwang and features several of Nollywood’s best, like Pete Edochie, Shaffy Bello, Matilda Lambert, Bishop Umoh (Okon Lagos), IK Ogbonna, and Linda Osifo. It started streaming on Netflix in August 2021.

9. King of Boys II

The original King of Boys movie came to Netflix in 2018. Now, its sequel, which is a series, began streaming on 27 August 2021. It tells the story of a businesswoman and philanthropist, with her bright political future.

10. Love is War

Love is War is one movie where Omoni Oboli did a great job directing. It stars her alongside Richard Mofe Damijo, Toke Makinwa, Bimbo Manuel, Shaffy Bello, Femi Branch, and Yemi Blaq. The film results from a collaboration between Dioni Visions and Inkblot Productions, his second film after Moms of War in 2018. It portrays the story of a couple competing for the governor’s office. Love is War first premiered in Nigerian theatres on September 27, 2019, but debuted on Netflix on 29 April 2020.

Now that Alter Ego is finally coming to Netflix after being exclusively available on Prime Video for two years and more; many Nigerian will get the opportunity to see it from the comfort of their homes.
