Remembering late Afrobeat King, Fela Anikulapo

On this day 21 years ago, Fela Anikulapo Kuti a Nigerian, musician, activist, composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre died at the age of 58 from complications related to AIDS.

If Fela were still alive, he would be 80 on October 15. Years after his death, his music still resonates as his songs continue to remain relevant in the current political and economic trend in Nigeria.

Fela’s music was popular among the Nigerian public and Africans. He made the decision to sing in Pidgin English so that his music could be enjoyed by every individual – from the poorest to the richest – all over Africa. His music was not appreciated by those in power.

Late Fela Kuti let the world with a rich repertoire of music and albums including Why Black Man Dey Suffer (1971), Shakara (1972), Afrodisiac (1973), Gentleman (1973) and many more.
