On October 20 2018, an upcoming writer stated that she would love to be one of the best writers the country would produce.
“I am going to be one of the best writers to come out of Nigeria,” aspiring writer going by Twitter handle @OniZay tweets.
Nnedi replied to the tweet in what sounded like a misinterpreted encouragement, writing: “Talk is Cheap”
This surely didn’t go well with the young writer and some Twitter users who believed the established author was being sassy.
The upcoming writer replied Nnedi, tweeting: “Lmao, this was so unnecessary and disappointing from you smh. I thought you were magic, but this is such a basic reply. Also, have you heard of speaking something into existence?”
In an effort to clear her misconstrued tweet, Nnedi says: “Yup. I did. it’s something I tell students all the time. It means, go write. But Twitter is Twitter.”
