Photographs of the gathering show that a photo of the 43-year-old actor was on display with a floral arrangement. The memorial service included music from a hang drum.
The actor who played T’Challa, the king of the fictional African country of Wakanda, died on 28 August 2020 after a four-year battle with colon cancer.
“He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side,” his family writes in a statement posted to Instagram and Twitter.
“The family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”
