Kate Winslet was forced to visit a hospital after an injury on set and we take the time to look at other actors injured on set while filming as well.
Although, in 46-year-old Winslet’s case, it had been an accident unrelated to the role she was playing. Yet, it made the news.
According to her team, she had slipped but there was no cause for worry and the hospital trip was just precautionary. Kate Winslet will continue filming this week as she looks to wrap up her job of playing photographer Lee Miller in the upcoming biographical movie, Lee.
This is not the first time that the actress had been involved in a filming mishap. While filming Titanic, she had nearly drowned because an underwater gate caught her coat. Winslet had to wiggle her way out of the coat to get free.

While on set for the 2020 sports drama Bruised, Halle Berry faced down Valentina Shevchenko, who is a real martial artist. During a fight scene, Shevchenko mistakenly kicked the actress so hard that she broke two ribs. Berry continued the scene after taking painkillers, thankfully, the movie did not tank. It earned her some notable nominations and award wins.
12. George Clooney in Syriana
George Clooney suffered an unprotected fall, while he was bound to chair, during the filming of political thriller Syriana. The actor had found the pain unbearable and thought of ending his life to make it stop. The film earned him an Academy Awards win in the end as Best Supporting Actor. However, against its budget of $50 million, it did not do well in the box office and managed to coop just $94 million.
11. Charlize Theron in Æon Flux
Theron has been the queen of action since her early days and she is notable for performing most of her stunts herself. During the filming of Æon Flux in 2004, Charlize Theron missed a turn in a backflip and landed on her neck. She suffered a herniated disc and there were fears that she would be paralyzed. The actress had to stay in a hospital for five days and underwent six weeks of physiotherapy after. Filming was suspended for a month during her recovery. Despite all that went into making the movie, it received negative reviews.
10. Leonardo DiCaprio in Django: Unchained
Leonardo DiCaprio’s Django: Unchained injury made it into the final cut of the movie. It happened while he was speaking during a dinner and banged his hand on the table. He unintentionally hit a glass and it cut his hand. Despite bleeding, he stayed in character and continued the scene until it finished. The medic had to stitch his hand after. You can say it was worth it as it earned him several awards and the movie is considered a masterpiece. Of course, he did not pull it off alone as he had an ensemble cast around him.
9. Michelle Yeoh in Crouching Tiger
Michelle Yeoh is nothing if not amazing and her performance in the movie, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon left nothing out. You’d be surprised to find that she wore a brace for most of the movie after she tore her ACL during the rooftops scene. Her injury required surgery and she said it took three months to be fit again. Then, she was able to film the last fight sequence free of her brace. Her and her colleagues made the film one of the best martial arts movies ever and it is also one of the most successful internationally.
8. Ruby Rose in Batwoman
Ruby Rose famously suffered an spinal cord injury while performing a stunt on the set of the Batwoman series. She was near paralysis and had to undergo an immediate surgery, which saved the use of her limbs. She described the experience as chronically painful. Later, Rose would reveal that she was not alone in getting injured on the TV show’s set and she lamented that the working conditions were not safe. For example, Amanda Smith, a production assistant on the show, was paralyzed after a bucket lift fell on her head. Several stunt persons were also injured.
7. Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible — Fallout
Tom Cruise is famous for his daredevil persona and his injury in Mission: Impossible — Fallout is just one of the many that he has suffered on set during his career. He is among the list of actors injured on set multiple times. In this one, he was jumping from one building to the next and hit the side of the wall with his ankle. The footage was used like that but filming was paused for several weeks which incurred a debt of $80 million, paid by insurance. The movie eventually made $791 million in the box office.

Jeremy Renner made a name for himself playing Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but has found other big roles. In 2017, while shooting the comedy film Tag, he broke his two arms as he fell from a stack of chairs 20 feet high. Renner did the stunt correctly the second time before he allowed himself be taken to the hospital. He came back to continue filming with casts on and the production team had to digitally erase them during post-production. The movie got average reviews across film review platforms.
5. Angela Bassett in What’s Love Got to Do With It
For her Golden Globe Award-winning performance in the Tina Turner biographical movie What’s Love Got to Do With It, Angela Bassett fractured her arm during filming. In the end, it was worth it and became one of the most notable acting performance she ever delivered. As one of the actors injured on set, Bassett’s injury had happened when she fell over a sofa during a domestic violence scene.
4. Dylan O’Brien in Maze Runner: The Death Cure
The science fiction movie Maze Runner: The Death Cure had some real scary action too. Actor Dylan O’Brien fell off a moving truck while filming and another oncoming vehicle hit him. The filming had to be suspended for a year after it was revealed that he suffered a concussion, facial fractures, and lacerations. Also, he needed time to recover from the mental trauma that the accident caused as he would later reveal that his first instinct was to not come back to the set again.
3. Johnny Depp in The Lone Ranger
The 2013 Western film The Lone Ranger met with several problems. There was bad weather, wildfires, a chickenpox outbreak, and the death of the crew water safety expert Michael Andrew Bridger. Then, actor Johnny Depp was thrown off a horse and dragged across the desert during filming. However, he only sustained a minor stomach bruise injury. The film was not a critical success and it barely made any money at the box office when the budget is subtracted.
2. Jaimie Alexander in Thor: The Dark World
Jaimie Alexander, who played Asgardian warrior Sif, had suffered a scary back injury during the filming period. Although, the accident did not occur during filming itself. She had slipped down a metal staircase one early morning and chipped 11 of her vertebrae and slipped a disc in her thoracic spine. She also injured her shoulder and had to be sidelined for a month.

Jackie Chan is famous for performing his own stunts for the longest period, especially during the early stages of his career. He built his reputation as of the actors injured on set. It had caused him some severe injuries but the scariest was while filming a scene for the 1986 action movie Armour of God. The actor was supposed to jump from a cliff to a tree but the branch he caught snapped and he fell from 40 feet. He landed badly and one of his bones punctured his brain. The actor was in surgery for eight hours following the incident and still has a hole in his head from the injury which is filled with a plastic plug. It also resulted in him suffering hearing loss in his right ear. The film became the highest-grossing film in Hong Kong at the time.
