The doll was fashioned after American fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad who won the bronze medal in Rio last time, as she became the first US woman to wear the hijab while competing at the Olympics. She had unveiled the doll at the award ceremony Glamour’s Women of the Year summit.
‘This is a childhood dream come true’ Ibtihaj had said when she spoke to reporters while still holding the doll. Mattel had been making waves after they aired a commercial of a boy playing with a barbie to encourage more sales and they have revealed that they plan to produce more dols in the form of influential women around the world.
Ibtihaj Muhammad had said that she was proud of young girls and women who wore their hijab and was happy that those who don’t wear the scarf can play with a Barbie who chooses to wear one.
She narrated about her experience in sports as a lone Muslim girl, who most times did not feel ‘among’ because of her head covering and how she overcame the stigma.
‘This Barbie is for you” she said to people who hadn’t believed in her.
