Young Thug, who won a Grammy for his co-written hit “This Is America” in 2019 has been arrested on criminal charges including membership within an illegal street gang according to Atlanta police records.
The rap artist, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams was also charged under Georgia state’s Conspiracy to Violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, according to Fulton County police records.
Williams’ latest album has been met with rave reviews, especially for its socially conscious message. The lyrics to Punk take on issues like police brutality and gun violence in America while maintaining a sense of humor that many fans appreciate about him as an artist.
The Times reported that Williams was among 27 other people who were charged in what is being called one of the most sweeping grand juries ever. The charges range from murder to attempted armed robbery, and they’re all members or associated with an organized street gang known as “The Gangster Disciples.”
That’s a question for the office of District Attorney Fani Willis. We’re not going to comment on it until we have more information about what happened in that investigation and why they closed their probe without charges being filed against anyone involved, especially considering how much attention this case has gotten nationwide since President Trump nominated her as our DA back when he first started running for president!
Willis has identified gang violence as a serious problem for Fulton County, Georgia. “I’d say 80% at minimum and probably more like 90%” of all the violent crimes seen in his jurisdiction are due to these street-level groups he says operate with little oversight from law enforcement officials or society itself,” he said.
