National Coming Out Day is an LGBTQ awareness day celebrated yearly on 11 October to support queer people for coming out of the closet.
It was created in 1988 to commemorate the 1987 March on Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights, which reportedly drew over 200,000 protesters to the nation’s capital that 11 October.
More than three decades later, the day is now an annual celebration to acknowledge LGBTQ people and raise awareness for their ongoing fight for equality.
To honor National Coming Out Day 2021, learn about eight notable coming-out stories so far in 2021.
1. Demi Lovato – Non-binary
Actor and singer Demi Lovato came out as nonbinary in May 2021 and said they would be changing their pronouns to they/them.
The singer who has had acting roles in Barney & Friends, Grey’s Anatomy, and Prison Break, wrote on Twitter:
“Not only has my life been a journey for myself, I was also living for those on the other side of the cameras. Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all — I am proud to let you know that I identify as nonbinary & will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward.
“I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering.”
2. TJ Osborne – Gay
He came out as gay in an interview with Times Magazine in February 2021, making him the first gay man signed to a major country music label and one of the first mainstream country artists to come out at the prime of their career.
Osborne told Time: “I’m very comfortable being gay. I find myself being guarded for not wanting to talk about something that I personally don’t have a problem with. That feels so strange.”
3. Tommy Dorfman – Transgender
The 13 Reasons Why star came out as transgender in July 2021 in an interview with Time.
According to her, the concept of coming out was funny to her because she hadn’t gone anywhere. Instead, she views the interview as a means of reintroducing herself.
“I view today as a reintroduction to me as a woman, having made a transition medically. Coming out is always viewed as this grand reveal, but I was never not out. Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman,” She said.
The actor who had been taking up male roles also mentioned that she looked forward to taking on female roles.
4. Lio Tipton – Queer/non-binary
Lio Tipton, who is best known for competing in America’s Next Top Model came out as queer and nonbinary in June 2021.

Sharing with their over 140,000 followers on Instagram, Tipton wrote: “I am proud to announce I am queer and I identify as non-binary. I hope to give as much love and support back to those who continue to show love and support for the Pride community at large.”
5. Luke Prokop – Gay
In July 2021, Nashville Predators’ Luke Prokop announced that he is gay, making him the first openly gay active NHL player when the season began.
In a post on Twitter, the 19-year-old Canadian wrote: “It has been quite the journey to get to this point in my life, but I cannot be happier with my decision to come out.
“From a young age, I have dreamed of being an NHL player, and I believe that living my authentic life will allow me to bring my whole self to the rink and improve my chances of fulfilling my dreams.”
6. Emma Corrin – Queer
The Emmy-winning actor, best known for her role as Princess Diana in Netflix’s The Crown,”came out as queer in April 2021
In a post on Instagram, Corrin captioned an image of her wearing a Miu Miu wedding gown: “ur fave queer bride.”
However, in an interview in August 2021 with ITV’s Granada Reports, Emma Corrin stated that she was still unsure about her identity.
“There’s no fixed identity, especially for, like, people in the queer community. It’s going to be an ongoing journey, but yeah, I hope that sharing (my truth) helps people.”
7. Mr Grim – Pansexual
Chris Lewis is a professional wrestler who is popular by his stage name, Mr. Grim. In January 2021 Mr. Grim came out on Twitter, stating that he is pansexual
He wrote: “For years, I’ve struggled with my identity, too worried about how others would feel or think about me. I’ve finally gained the courage to openly express that I’m pansexual.”
8. Kaitlyn Weaver – Queer
Canadian figure skater Kaitlyn Weaver announced in a June post on Instagram that she is queer.
The 32-year old wrote: “I’m shaking writing this message, but knowing that I’m moving in a loving, authentic, and compassionate way feels right.
“You all know me — I follow my heart, and that always leads me to the right place. I’m ready to move forward living, loving, and being honest with all of my identity.”
