Candyman, The Colony, He’s All That, and other new films and TV shows to see this weekend

Candyman, The Colony, Vacation Friends, Clickbait, He’s All That, No man of God, and other new films and series coming out this weekend.

Is it just me, or the excitement of the weekend actually no longer lasts long anymore? The two days fly by so fast you feel swindled. That said, one can either lament the shortness of the weekend or make the best use of it. I choose the latter, and I am here to help you enjoy your weekend with a fine selection of new films and TV shows debuting today.

1. Candyman

“Candyman” is a 2021 supernatural slasher film directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld and DaCosta. It is a direct sequel to the 1992 film of the same name and the fourth film in the Candyman film series. As the story goes, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, Anthony and his partner move into a loft in the now gentrified Cabrini. A chance encounter with an old-timer exposes Anthony to the true story behind the Candyman. Anxious to use these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, he unknowingly opens the door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifying wave of violence. Starring Emmy winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II alongside Teyonah Parris and some others, the film makes its theatrical debut today, Friday, 27 August.

2. The Colony

“The Colony” is a 2021 German-Swiss science fiction thriller film directed and written by Tim Fehlbaum. Cataclysmic conditions on Earth forced a mass exodus to a distant planet. Generations later, a manned mission hurtles back to assess living conditions on the desolate, mostly submerged world. The sole survivor of the expedition is attacked by a violent band of scavengers, themselves locked in battle with a far more sinister foe. Now, mankind’s very survival depends on the bravery and ingenuity of the lone astronaut. The film stars “Game of Thrones” star Ian Glenn in the main role and “The Colony” swarms cinemas this weekend.

3. Vacation Friends

“Vacation Friends” is an American buddy comedy film that follows a crazy wild couple who bond with a straight-laced couple on vacation in Mexico. They have a great time and then want to rekindle the fun. Once the other couple gets back to their normal life, it’s not nearly the same kind of fun, and their vacation friends won’t go away. It stars John Cena, Lil Rel Howery, Clay Tarver, Tom Mullen, Tim Mullen, and Meredith Hagner. Cinemas will welcome “Vacation Friends” this Friday.

4. Clickbait

If short TV series is your thing, this one will suit you just fine. “Clickbait” is an American-Australian drama streaming television miniseries created by Tony Ayres and Christian White. When Nick Brewer (a family man) is abducted in a crime, those closest to him race to uncover who is behind it and why. The series features a sinister online twist and debuted on the Netflix streaming platform on 25th August.

5. He’s All That

“He’s All That” is an American teen romantic comedy film directed by Mark Waters. The film is a gender-swapped remake of the 1999 film “She’s All That”. The contemporary story follows an influencer (Addison Rae) who accepts a challenge to turn the school’s biggest loser (Tanner Buchanan) into prom king. “He’s All That” comes out on Netflix today, 27 August. You can literally enjoy this laid up in bed with bae or with a glass of wine if you’re baeless.

6. No Man of God

“No Man of God” is a 2021 American crime mystery film directed by Amber Sealey and written by Kit Lesser. In 1980, Ted Bundy was sentenced to death by electrocution. In the years that followed, he agreed to disclose the details of his crimes, but only to one man. The film is based on the true story of the strange and complicated relationship that developed between FBI agent Bill Hagmaier and an incarcerated Ted Bundy in the years leading to Bundy’s execution. This one has Elijah Wood of the “Lord of The Rings” and Luke Kirby in lead roles. “No Man of God” premieres in cinemas today.

7. Together

This one is for hopeless romantics like myself. “Together” is a 2021 British comedy-drama television film directed by Stephen Daldry. A couple are forced to re-evaluate themselves and their relationship through the reality of lockdown. The wife is a charity worker, a coordinator for all of Europe at a refugee charity and the daughter of a dentist father with an old socialist mother and the only grandparent still around. The husband, meanwhile, is a self-employed, self-made man who runs a boutique computing consultancy. How did they fare, and what did they eventually arrive at? 8. See (Season 2)

“See” is an American science fiction drama television series produced for Apple TV+. The story is set in a future where humankind has lost the ability to see and is forced to interact in new ways. Then, a set of twins with sight is born, challenging the status quo. The second season debuted on Apple TV+ yesterday, and binging on the first season might just be a great idea. “See” season 2 stars Jason Momoa, Archie Madekwe, among others.

9. Ellie and Abbie

“Ellie and Abbie” is an Australian LGBT romance comedy film written and directed by Monica Zanetti in her feature directorial debut. School captain Ellie has a serious crush on her classmate Abbie and is struggling over inviting her to the Year 12 formal. When Ellie accidentally spills the beans to her mum and outs herself in the process, things start to get complicated and a little bit spooky. Enter her deceased aunt Tara, a lesbian activist from the ’80s who returns from the dead to act as a kind of fairy godmother to Ellie, guiding her through the trials and tribulations of her first love. “Ellie and Abbie” premieres today, 27 August.

10. The Good Fight (Season 5)

“The Good Fight” is an American legal drama series streaming on Paramount plus. “In the blink of an eye, Diane Lockhart, a lawyer, loses her entire life savings due to a scam. She is then forced to find a job and start afresh,” reads the premise. “The Good Fight” season 5 final episode shows today on Paramount+, and you can begin a full-blown binge of the entire series if you haven’t seen any yet. This is the kind of content you can enjoy indoor with family and/or loved ones. It is as hilarious as it is educative. Try it.
