John Legend recently announced that he would produce a film about the life of late comedy heavyweight Bernie Mac, and his daughter Je’Niece McCullough already has some actors who she’ll like to play her dad. The biopic has no specific release date or production timeline as of yet.
According to Young, Black & Fabulous, Bernie Mac’s daughter has either Aldis Hodge and Mark Philips in mind to portray her dad. At the 2021 Tribeca Film festival, John Legend’s production company Get Lifted announced teaming up with Bernie Mac’s estate to create a biopic about his life and career.
“We just partnered with Bernie Mac’s estate to cover Bernie Mac’s story,” John’s production partner Mike Jackson said. The news left the EGOT winner visibly stunned, as he claimed he didn’t know about it until then.
“Look at you breaking news over here,” John Legend said in response. The singer had appeared in one of late Bernie Mac’s last films, making this new development something of a full-circle moment, as Jackson highlighted.

The biopic is set to be a feature film, but there are no other details yet. The comedian’s daughter is not wasting any time choosing who she will like to portray Bernie. She told TMZ she would like to see either Aldis Hodge or Mark Philips play the role.
On the one hand, Je’Neice feels Aldis is fit to play Bernie as an adult. He has already proven his mettle by playing MC Ren in Ice Cube’s “Straight Outta Compton” and NFL legend Jim Brown in Regina King’s “One Night in Miami”.
On the other hand, she feels Mark Phillips would be a good contender to play a younger Bernie. According to her, her daughter loves Mark and always says how much he reminds her of Bernie.
We are excited about the project and what is to come from it. Hopefully, they get the casting right and do justice to the character. We will keep you updated as things develop. May Bernie keep resting in peace.
