Broadcast Music Inc (BMI) crowned “Jesus Is King” crooner Kanye West Songwriter of the Year at the 2021 BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Awards, announced on Monday, 7 June 7.
The rapper won for writing the award-winning gospel songs “Hands On,” “On God,” and “Selah” off his ninth studio album, “Jesus Is King“. It had previously won a Grammy in March as Best Contemporary Christian music album.
The songs all did massively well on charts. Meanwhile, West’s collab with one of gospel’s legendary stars, Fred Hammond, on “Hands On,” made the Billboard’s Christian, Gospel, R&B/Hip-Hop, as well as the Hot 100 charts.

During the 2020 Billboard Music Awards, “Selah,” which broke into the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, was nominated for the top gospel song award, where it competed against “On God.”

Other winners from the 2021 BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Awards include Donald Lawrence and Sir the Baptist, who won Song of the Year for writing “Deliver Me (This Is My Exodus).”
The song, performed by Lawrence, the Tri-City Singers, and Le’Andria Johnson, won the GMA Dove Award for traditional gospel recorded song of the year as well.

In 2015, Donald Lawrence also won the award for “The Gift,” and his recent recognition makes it his eighth BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Award win.
Also, Songs of Kobalt Music Publishing, who represented three of BMI’s 20 most-performed gospel songs, won the publisher of the year award for the songs, “I Made It Out,” written and performed by Pastor John P. Kee featuring Zacardi Cortez; “Keep the Faith,” written and performed by Charles Jenkins; and “Won’t Let Go,” written and performed by Travis Greene.
