The police in South Africa has arrested a fellow officer and an accomplice on charges of selling police-issued ammunition and weapons.
Police spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said the 46-year-old warrant officer, Samuel Govindasamy, from Bayview police station in Chatsworth and his 50-year-old accomplice, Inderaj Bisooncharran, were nabbed following an undercover operation.
They are alleged to have stolen 400 rounds of ammunition from police stations in and around Chatsworth, Durban.
They also stand accused of contravening the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.
”The Hawks Anti-Corruption Task Team ‘worked’ with the duo posing as criminals and managed to purchase lots of ammunition, bulletproof vests, pepper spray and police uniforms.”
The suspects who were arrested on Friday appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, and will be re-arraigned in mid-November. They are being held without bail.
