In the motion, Melaye noted that he is “alarmed that there is now a desperate attempt by the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing to retrieve the sum of $350 million” fund domiciled with the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA). According to Senator Melaye, the said amount was a show of confidence by the federal government to its commitment to the privatisation of the power sector.
He alleged that the Ministry intends to divert the fund to the fast power projects which the Ministry of Power has already spent $35 million on. He further alleged that the Ministry has already spent #35 million on the fast power projects. He said that the money comprised of $29 million which the Ministry paid to General electricity and another $6 million to consultants.
He questioned whether due process was followed to warrant the expenditure and demanded that the identification of the consultants.
He asked why the whole transaction was shrouded in secrecy and want to know the value of Afam Fast plant. he also demands to know why the Ministry will construct new plants with the old ones lying idle.
He added that he is concerned that due process may not have been followed and that he is “convinced that there is an urgent need to bring the Ministry to order regarding its planned diversion of the sum of $350 million meant for NBET (Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Company).”
Tha was not all. The Senator “further demand(s) a detailed account of unappropriated public funds spent on the controversial fast power projects.”
