Nigeria Senate ordered to cut short its recess to probe fuel scarcity: Kachikwu and Baru to appear before committee

The Senate President Bukola Saraki has given a directive to the Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream to cut short its recess and attend to the issue of the lingering fuel scarcity in the country.

To appear before the committee are the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu and the Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru.

A statement from the Senate President’s Media Office on Thursday, says the duo is expected to meet the committee on Thursday, January 4, 2018.

Side note: 4th of January doesn’t convey any sense of urgency.

The statement reads: “The President of the Senate has directed the Committee On Petroleum Downstream to cut short its recess to address the lingering fuel scarcity bedevilling the nation in the last few weeks.

Arising from this directive, the committee will meet with the minister and GMD on Thursday, 4th January 2018 by 12.00pm in room 221. Note that the meeting will be covered live by NTA”.

A welcomed development, no doubt and we also like the bit about live coverage. The wonder was that the Senate went on recess in the first place. The petrol crisis did not happen overnight; it was in the news weeks before Christmas.

In other development, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Nasarawa State have arrested 36 petrol marketers for selling the product above official price of N145.00.

Meanwhile, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) in Lagos, alleged that the NNPC did not give its members enough petrol. They also accused the Corporation of no longer selling to them at N133.28 per litre and that it was impossible for them to continue selling the product at NNPC’s official price of N145 per litre.

Does any other person recall the statement by Governor Fayose that the fuel scarcity is a ploy by the federal government to increase pump price from N145.00 to N185.00?

We’ll keep you posted as events unfold.
