In a rare confrontation between the two forces, The PUNCH reported how an immigration officer suffered a life threatening injury by the actions of a policeman.
The 32 year old Roland Oibe who is attached to the Benue State command of the Nigerian Immigration Service was returning home on his private motorcycle when the incident occurred very close to his home on Benson Abonu street.
His brother, Daniel, narrates the story:
“My brother was attacked by the policeman on Monday around 8pm. His wife had just been delivered of their first child. He went to buy baby food and was riding home when the policeman threw something at the motorcycle.
“There is no justification for the attack. Although, there is a law banning commercial motorcycle riders from operating in the state from 9pm, the commercial motorcycles have a grading system, which distinguish them from private motorcycles. My brother was riding a private motorcycle and he was not flagged down.
“When I got to the scene, I gathered that the policeman had fled. We rushed him to a private hospital where he had been receiving treatment.”
Daniel reports that his brother lost some of his teeth and broke his jaw in the fall. However, Daniel who is the victim’s elder brother reported later that the Police have visited him at the hospital and told him that the culprit had been arrested, although his name was still withheld from him.
The news comes as shocking because if this was to be a private individual and a civilian with no link to the armed forces, the matter would must likely be i=under some sort of carpet now as according to reports, some policemen abuse their authorities,
The State’s Police Public Relations Officer is yet to confirm this report as he, Moses Yamu, claims to be unaware of the incidence but promised to give full details after looking into the matter.
