Ondo Poly Students Protests ASUP Strike.

It seems it is the season of protests in Nigeria.

Hundreds of students of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, on Thursday protested against their lecturers’ decision to join the nationwide strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics.

The lecturers of the state-owned polytechnic, who just resumed from an industrial action a few weeks ago for internal disagreements, again joined the ASUP strike on Monday.

The students kicked against the action of the lecturers, saying the lecturers were insensitive to their academic career.

The protesters barricaded the school’s main entrance, preventing vehicles from going in or moving out.

They were also armed with placards with inscriptions, such as, ‘If truly we are the leaders of tomorrow, why stampeding our future’, ‘Ijawoye (ASUP chairman), stop using us as instruments of negotiation.’

The President of the Student Union Government of the institution, Mr. Temitayo Aiyejuyo, said, “We believe the ASUP national strike does not concern us. Our lecturers just resumed from one. They should know that our future is at stake.”

However, the school’s ASUP Chairman, Mr. Rafiu Ijawoye, said the union must obey the directive from its national headquarters, urging the students to bear with them and understand that they are fighting for what is best for everyone.
