4 facts about Ramadan you didn’t know

Eid Mubarak from Sidomex to all our Muslim readers. For the millionth time, this is not the ram Sallah!

It is that time of the year again. Muslims are getting bedecked in their Eid’s finest, heading to the prayer ground and some non-Muslims are waiting anxiously for their Muslim neighbour to bring them some ram’s meat. Sorry to disappoint but this isn’t that Eid.

To commemorate the date and felicitate with Muslims, we have decided to share with you some facts about Ramadan you didn’t know.

What is Ramadan?

It is a month every year where Muslims give up food and drink until sunset. This helps Muslims to get closer to Allah as it is one of the pillars of Islam. Every Shawwal – a month in Ramadan, Muslims look out for the moon that signifies the start of the holy month. The month is over at the sighting of the moon when it comes to the end of the month or when thirty days are up. The celebration at the end of Ramadan is called Eid al-Fitr.

What does Eid Mubarak mean?

Eid Mubarak is the greeting said by Muslims to each other on the day Ramadan ends. ‘Eid’ means a celebration and ‘Mubarak’ means blessing. Put together, Eid Mubarak simply means a celebration of a blessing. If you see your Muslim friend on the day of Eid, you can greet them this way.

Why do Muslims fast?

Ramadan is generally celebrated as the first month during which the holy prophet Muhammad (SAW) received the first parts of what is now the holy Quran.

When is it time for meat then?

Eid al-Adha is the second Eid Muslims celebrate. It commemorates the time Allah mercifully provided a ram for Ibrahim to sacrifice instead of having him sacrifice his son. Yes, this is the one where you get to eat Ram’s meat.
