It took a clumsy own goal after 62 minutes of play from Ahmed Fathy to break the deadlock but from there on out the Egyptians seemed to lose their grip on the game.
The Russians managed to add 2 more goals into the mix before Mohammed Salah eventually managed to win and score a penalty and give his side a bit of hope.
The Egyptians, however, never really looked like they could come back into the game. This loss, almost certainly means that they will not qualify from their group unless Saudi Arabia manages to somehow beat Uruguay.
Senegal, on the other hand, managed to secure a 2-1 win against Poland.
An own goal by Thiago Cionek handed Senegal the lead in the 37th minute, the next goal came from a strike by M’Baye Niang. The goal was his first for Senegal and his first shot on target in the game.
Grzegorz Krychowiak later pulled one back by heading home a Kamil Grosicki free-kick to make it 2-1 but Poland couldn’t find an equaliser.
A much more dramatic fixture was the one between Japan and Colombia that got off to a terrible start for the Colombians.
Carlos Sanchez was sent off the pitch after three minutes of play for a deliberate handball, stopping Shinji Kagawa’s goal-bound shot. Kagawa masterfully puts away the penalty before Colombia came back through Quintero’s freekick.
The Japanese fired back, taking the lead when FC Koln forward Yuya Osako headed the winner in the 73rd minute.
All efforts of the Colombian team to put the teams back on level terms were futile as they met a very disciplined an organised Japanese team.
Japan now have the hopes of progressing past the group stages for the first time since 2010.
