The Urban Dictionary is an online crowdsourced software that gives definitions to words not found in standard dictionaries. These words can be slangs and phrases.

Aaron Peckham created it in 1999 because he wanted to compare urban slang used by university students in different parts of California and its motto is “Define Your World.”

Urban Dictionary has gained popularity over the years and is regarded as one of the top 500 most-used websites worldwide back in 2017 by Alexa.com. According to The Sun, the dictionary has over 12 million definitions with 2000 daily additions.

But, when you have a second look, the dictionary doesn’t include only literal definitions, but descriptions. For example, Marina has various definitions in Urban Dictionary.

First, the dictionary describes it as “Marina is the most beautiful girl in the world. You may mistaken her for being shy, but you are wrong! She is the life of the party when around the right people. She has the biggest heart and loves to love and to be loved. Her love for other people and animals is unreal. Her long wavy brown hair and big brown eyes add to her seductive and mysterious mannerism. She is s_xy and cute and is really the whole package. If you happen to meet a Marina, do not let her go, as she is definitely a keeper!…”

And this is just one of its definitions. Meanwhile, the standard dictionary defines Marina as “a specially designed harbour with moorings for pleasure yachts and small boats.”

Also, almost anyone could add a definition to the Urban dictionary, as long as they provide a valid email address. After a definition is added, the dictionary accepts it based on votes from its volunteer editors. The editors are not allowed to edit the entries for grammar mistakes – punctuation or spelling, instead, they are provided with only three options – “Add It!,” “Keep Out!,” and “I Can’t Decide.”

Hence, the dictionary’s definitions can not suffice as the definition for the words or phrases.

The dictionary also has a definition for its owner, Aaron Peckham. According to Urban Dictionary, “He’s the dude that created this website. Aaron Peckham was a computer science student in 1999 when he launched a Web site to compare urban slang used by university students in different parts of California.”

Peckham founded Urban Dictionary in 1999 when he was a freshman in college at California Polytechnic State University. The website started becoming popular and in 2008, Time Magazine ranked it amongst the year’s 50 best websites.  A year after, 15 million unique monthly visitors go to the website.
