Trailer Thursday: Netflix returns with second African original series, ‘JIVA!’

Welcome to another Trailer Thursday, the perfect place to be for lovers of all things that have to do with movies.

Today, we’ll be dissecting Netflix’s second African original series, a dance series titled ‘JIVA!’. South Africa based Blue Ice Africa will be in charge of producing the dance series.

‘JIVA!’ tells the story of a talented street dancer called Ntombi, who while juggling the demands of a dead-end job, family responsibility and complex love life, realizes that her choreography could be her ticket out of her working-class neighbourhood in Durban.

However, in order to succeed, she must first overcome her fears, thrash her rivals, and attempt to resolve some of the problems in her family.

The cast also includes Noxolo Dlamini playing the lead, Candice Modiselle, Sne Mbatha, Stella Dlangalala and veteran actor Tony Kgoroge.

This is no doubt wonderful news for Africans as only a few days ago, it was announced that Netflix’s first African original, ‘Queen Sono’ has been renewed for the second season. And now, the second badass show is on its way.

In preparation for the release of the drama series, Netflix released a trailer that asks, “What does JIVA mean?”

The answer: “JIVA is a physical interpretation of music. It’s also a hype thing.”

Watch the trailer below and let us know if you’ll be watching this drama series. Also, what do you think JIVA means?
