Premier League Roundup: Manchester United inflict more woes on Everton; Chelsea continue fine form

Manchester United answered critics with a hard-fought 3-1 away win at Goodison Park on Saturday. Bruno Fernandes scored twice and set up Cavani for the third, to ease the pressure on under-fire manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Everton started brightly on the afternoon at Goodison Park as Bernard fired them ahead after 19 minutes on his first Premier League start of the season.

United drew level six minutes later through a powerful header by Bruno Fernandes, with the Portuguese then sending his side ahead when his cross to set up Marcus Rashford ended up in the back of the net.

Fernandes then rounded off a fine individual display on the afternoon by setting up substitute Edinson Cavani for his first United goal in injury time.

As a result, United recorded a seventh straight away win in the league – their best run for 27 years – while Everton missed out on the chance to go top after their third loss in a row.

Watch the highlights below…

The win means United have now made a better start to the campaign than they managed last season, when they eventually finished third, while Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has now lost three consecutive league games for the first time since he was in charge of AC Milan 14 years ago.

  • Manchester United have now won 17 Premier League away games at Goodison Park, the most victories for a visiting side at a specific venue in the competition.
  • Both sides scored with their first shots on target in this match, with Everton’s goal in the 19th minute their only effort on target in the whole match.
  • Manchester United’s first two goals in this match both had 15+ passes in the build-up, the first time the Red Devils have scored 2+ such goals in the same league match since November 2016 (vs Swansea).

Chelsea 4-1 Sheffield United: Blues move third with an impressive showing against winless Blades

Chelsea continued to gel together as a team and strolled to a fourth straight win as they fought back from a goal down to beat Sheffield United 4-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Premier League Matchday 8

The blues completed the turnaround in the 34th minute as Ben Chilwell bundled home Ziyech’s deep cross at the far post before man-of-the-match Ziyech assisted Chelsea’s third when he set up Thiago Silva to nod home his first Chelsea goal.

Timo Werner got in on the act to seal the win, smashing home as the ball broke into his path ten minutes from time.

The result lifts Chelsea into third position on the Premier League table, just a point behind leaders, Liverpool, while Sheffield United remain bottom having taken just one point from a possible 33 since beating Chelsea 3-0 on July 11.
