Premier League Roundup: Hakim Ziyech enjoying start to life in a Chelsea shirt; Diogo Jota rescues Liverpool yet again

Hakim Ziyech scored on his first Premier League start as Chelsea blew away Burnley 3-0 while also keeping a fourth clean sheet in a row, a rare occurrence since Frank Lampard took charge.

Edouard Mendy, the new goalie signed from Rennes, has conceded just one goal in six appearances, and his arrival seems to have settled Lampard’s team down defensively, although he was hardly tested at Turf Moor.

Hakim Ziyech put the visitors in front in the 26th minute of the game, firing low into the bottom corner after getting a pass from Tammy Abraham in the 18-yard area.

Kurt Zouma doubled Chelsea’s lead powering home a header to grab his third goal of the Premier League season before Timo Werner wrapped up the points with a majestic finish that sends Burnley bottom of the league.

Sean Dyche celebrated his eighth season at Burnley earlier this week but may face his stiffest task to date in trying to keep them away from the bottom three.

They’ve only managed just one point from their opening six games, scoring just one goal in their last six in all competitions.

Stats and facts from the match (Backed by Opta)

  • Chelsea have won six of their seven away Premier League matches against Burnley (D1), winning each of their last four in a row.
  • Burnley have picked up just one point in their opening six league games this season, their worst ever start to a league season in their history.
  • Ziyech became the first Chelsea player to score in his first two starts for the club since Diego Costa back in August 2014.

Liverpool 2-1 West Ham: Diogo Jota’s late winner rescues all three points for an underperforming Liverpool side

Diogo Jota proved to be the Anfield hero at the moment as he scored his third straight Anfield goal in the Premier League to get Liverpool out of jail with a 2-1 comeback victory against a resolute West Ham side.

Premier League Matchday 7

The Premier League champions, Liverpool, have conceded first for the third time in four Premier League games at Anfield this season, as Pablo Fornals capitalised on a sloppy Joe Gomez clearance to put the Hammers in front.

But West Ham completed the favour as Liverpool’s leveller was equally as cheap.

Arthur Masuaku’s needless contact on Mo Salah in the box earned the Reds a penalty, which Salah duly converted shortly before half time.

Liverpool tried all they could to get in front but nothing was forthcoming until Diogo Jota was subbed on.

VAR was the first to deny the Portuguese as his rebound was ruled out for Sadio Mane’s foul on Angelo Ogbonna, but the new Liverpool signing converted when he got his second chance to give Liverpool the win.

The win means Liverpool are now 63 top-flight games unbeaten at home, equalling their record from 1978 to 1980.

Stats and facts from the match (Backed by Opta)

  • Only Aston Villa in 1897-98 (17) have conceded more goals in their first seven league matches as a reigning top-flight champion than Liverpool this season (15). The Reds took 23 games to concede 15 Premier League goals last season.
  • Since David Moyes’ first game back in charge of West Ham in January, the Hammers have dropped more points from winning positions than any other side in the Premier League (16).
  • Liverpool have conceded the first goal in three of their four home league games this season – as many times as they did in all 19 league matches at Anfield last term. Indeed, the Reds have fallen behind in three consecutive home games in the Premier League for the first time since May 2012 (four in a row).
  • Only Fernando Torres in 2009-10 (eight) scored more goals in Liverpool’s opening seven matches of a Premier League season than Mo Salah’s seven this campaign.
  • Diogo Jota is just the second player to score in all of his first three Premier League appearances for Liverpool at Anfield, after Luis Garcia in October 2004.
