Famed Nigerian alternative singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, recently disclosed that her verse on “Essence”, with Wizkid, could have been much better.
The song, which is quite the jam, hasn’t stopped buzzing since its release off Wizkid’s album, “Made In Lagos”. It is arguably the fans’ favourite on the album. This is made evident by the amount of airplay it has enjoyed since its release, and how it has been topping music charts. All of that notwithstanding, Tems says the song could have even been a lot better.
According to her, she didn’t deliver on the song as well as she does on her other songs, and she tried to fix that. While speaking with Apple Music 1’s The Dotty Show, Tems said she wasn’t so impressed by her verse on “Essence”. Here we were, thinking the song couldn’t be more fire than that.
The singer revealed that she desired to redo her verse on the song, but wasn’t given the opportunity to do so. “Even on the day I recorded my verse on the song, I felt I could do better,” she said. Openiyi went on to explain that she requested for the beat so she could redo her verse, but Wizkid’s team said it was good already.
“I told them I still wanted to top it, but they did not let me. However, I was happy with it. I always like to challenge myself,” Tems added.
She concluded by saying that she used to be a compulsive perfectionist, but since Wizkid actually liked the verse, it was alright. Think about it for a moment guys, as fire as it was, “Essence” could have been sweeter. Wow!
