Top 10 most watched Netflix series: K-drama series Squid Game leads the way

In recent weeks, the insane upsurge of the Korean drama series Squid Game has given rise to the conversation about the most watched Netflix series.

Squid Game leads the pack now with a stupendous 142 million viewers so far, but how about the rest of the pack? Netflix reported an approximate total of 213.6 million subscribers in the 3rd quarter of 2021 and is thus arguably the most popular streaming service now. The success of the contents on there is a testament to this fact. In this piece, we look at a list of the 10 most-watched Netflix series, in ascending order.

10. Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness (season 1) – 64 million views

Tiger King is an American true crime documentary streaming television miniseries. It follows the life of former zookeeper and convicted felon Joe Exotic. The series focuses on the small but deeply interconnected society of big cat conservationists such as Carole Baskin, owner of Big Cat Rescue, and collectors such as Exotic, whom Baskin accuses of abusing and exploiting wild animals. It is an exploration of big cat breeding and its bizarre underworld, populated by eccentric characters, namely zoo operator Joseph Maldonado-Passage. The series premiered on Netflix in March 2020 and has garnered 64 million views so far.

9. La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) season 4 – 65 million views

Money Heist is a Spanish heist crime drama television series created by Álex Pina. The series traces two long-prepared heists led by the Professor, one on the Royal Mint of Spain, and one on the Bank of Spain told from the perspective of one of the robbers, Tokyo. Though the series was an instant hit among audiences, it wasn’t until its fourth season that it became one of the most-watched series on Netflix, peaking at 65 million views.

8. Maid – 67 million views

Maid is an American drama streaming television limited series inspired by Stephanie Land’s memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive. Single mother Alex turns to housecleaning to make ends meet as she escapes an abusive relationship and overcomes homelessness to create a better life for her daughter, Maddy. The show has been described by The Ringer as an illustration of the endless Catch-22 poor people in America face. It premiered on Netflix on 1 October 2021 and has already amassed a whopping 67 million views thus far.

8. Stranger Things (Season 3) – 67 million views

Horror hardly ever misses, and it didn’t with this Duffer Brothers helmed TV series. The American science fiction horror drama television series is set in 1980s Indiana where a group of young friends witness supernatural forces and secret government exploits. As they search for answers, the children unravel a series of extraordinary mysteries. Its third season has been its most popular so far, tying with Maid at 67 million views.

8. Sex/Life (Season 1) – 67 million views

Premise: “A woman’s daring sexual past collides with her married-with-kids present when the bad-boy ex she can’t stop fantasizing about crashes back into her life.” One thing that never doesn’t sell is sex! Most of the time, it doesn’t even have to be solid content, and that seems to be the case with this one. Sex/Life is an American drama streaming television series created by Stacy Rukeyser for Netflix. The series is inspired by the novel 44 Chapters About 4 Men by BB Easton. Though it tanked in ratings by critics, it didn’t lack viewership and it ties with Stranger Things 3 and Maid at 67 million views.

5. La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) season 5 – 69 million

It is quite understandable why this one has done such mad numbers. Other than the fact that the series itself has held its audience by the throat with its many twists and wicked suspense, and the transport of cordiality felt for the characters, the “season finale” factor added an extra oomph to its appeal. As part of a scheduled release, the first five parts of the final season debuted in September. So far, it has garnered 69 million views amidst talks about the show’s deviation from the initial plot.

4. The Witcher (season 1) – 76 million

Set on a fictional, medieval-inspired landmass known as “the Continent”, The Witcher explores the legend of Geralt of Rivia and Princess Ciri, who are linked to each other by destiny. The Witcher Geralt, a mutated monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world in which people often prove more wicked than beasts. Right on the heels of a disappointing Game Of Thrones finale, and starring DC Comics Superman actor, Henry Cavill, who many consider eye candy, it was bound to be a hit. The first season had scored high with 76 million views. Season two is billed for a 17 December 2021 release.

4. Lupin (season 1) – 76 million

Lupin is a French mystery thriller streaming television series created by George Kay and François Uzan. It is a retelling of the classic French story about Arsène Lupin, the world-famous gentleman thief and master of disguise. The show did so well with audiences all over the world, peaking at 76 million views. Its second season didn’t do so well, however.

2. Bridgerton (season 1) – 82 million

There are many reasons why this one was a hit. For one, it is a perfect period romance drama, add that to the fact that Shonda Rhimes was involved in its creation. Lest I forget, it has the most beautiful black man ever. The story follows eight close-knit siblings of the powerful Bridgerton family’s attempt to find love during the Regency era in England. For very long, the show led the pack of most-watched Netflix series with 82 million views.

1. Squid Game (season 1) – 142 million

Drumrolls… Who would have thought that a foreign language show will come to be the most-watched on the streaming service? Like its creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said, it is strange how such a story became so socially relevant within ten years. The story follows hundreds of cash-strapped contestants who accept an invitation to compete in children’s games for a tempting prize, unaware of the deadly stakes. In just 28 days, the show became the most-watched ever on Netflix. It currently has a total of 142 million views, and fans are clamoring for a follow-up season.
