Weekend watchlist – 10 trending movies/TV series you should see right now

A Madea Homecoming, Vikings: Valhalla, No Exit, and other must-see movies, television, and web series this weekend.

It’s another weekend, and while the week took an unexpectedly tragic turn, we can only continue to hope and pray for the better. To ease your mind over recent events, I have curated another list of 10 movies, television shows, and everything on viewable to check out this weekend.

Here are the hottest things happening on screens that should be on your watchlist this weekend.

10. Cake

Cake is another Nollywood rom-com currently showing in cinemas since 25 February 2022. Steven Gukas returns with Dotun Olakunri as co-producer and Tongryang Pantu as the executive producer. It stars Sophie Alakija in the lead role alongside media personality Folu Storm, actor Tope Tedela, poet Philip Asaya, and actress Patience Ozokwor. The movie marks Big Brother Naija 2021 alumni, Saskay’s acting debut and follows the story of a baker caught in a love triangle.

9. A Madea Homecoming

Tyler Perry is back as Madea this Friday, 25 February 2022, on Netflix. The film marks the twelfth installment in the Madea cinematic universe, executively directed and written by Tyler Perry, and parades Beyonce’s 2018 Homecoming concert film in its opening title. It also marks Perry’s second Netflix movie and concerns Madea welcoming her family back in town ahead of her great-grandson’s graduation from college. Of course, based on the franchise’s reputation, several dramas will unfold while secrets will spill. Alongside Tyler Perry in the lead role, the movie also features Joe Simmons, Cassie Davis-Patton, David Mann, Tamela Mann, Gabrielle Dennis, Brandon Black, Isha Blakker, and Jennifer Gibney.

8. The Proud Family: Louder And Louder

Disney’s revived animated television series The Proud Family: Louder and Louder premiered on Wednesday, 23 February 2022. In this new one, the family navigates life in the 2020s, and it notably features more diverse cast members. For example, while American actress Kyla Pratt reprised her role as the lead character, Keke Palmer, Cedric the Entertainer, Alisa Rhyes, EJ Johnson, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Zachary Quinto, Bretman Rock, and others joined the cast. Bruce W Smith, Ralph Farquhar, and Calvin Brown Jr served as the executive producers. There are currently two episodes of the show available for streaming on Disney+.

7. KIMI

Set to star alongside Robert Pattinson in the new Batman movie, American actress Zoe Kravitz stars in HBO Max thriller/crime movie KIMI, released earlier this month on the streaming platform. It tells the story of a tech worker (played by Zoe Kravitz) who suffers from anxiety and agoraphobia. However, she discovers a violent crime through an intelligent speaker referred to as (KIMI). While trying to report and convince the authority about the crime, she is abducted. Written by David Koepp and directed by Steven Soderbergh, the 2-hour long film features Rita Wilson, India de Beaufort, Alex Dobrenko, Devin D. Ratray, Emily Kuroda, Byron Bowers, and others.

6. The Little Things

On the web, Nigeria’s On-air radio personality Mayowa Mula teams up with Simi Drey for a short film called The Little Things. In the 12-minute production, Mayowa Mula and Simi Drey play a couple with differing opinions on infidelity. Shot as a one-scene film; in my opinion, the movie is a mild effort from the two radio personalities at an acting career. Additionally, it seems to mark an attempt to put their issues to bed. The Little Things premiered on YouTube on 14 February 2022 and is still available to stream.

5. I Want You Back

I Want You Back is an Amazon Prime Video romantic comedy released a week before Valentine, 11 February 2022. It tells the story of two strangers who, after being dumped by their exes, come together to form an alliance to sabotage their exes’ new relationships. A review by The Guardian calls it “a far better version of the romantic comedy in the streaming era.” The romantic comedy stars Charlie Day and Jenny Slate in lead roles alongside Scott Eastwood, Manny Jacinto, Clark Backo, and Gina Rodriguez.

4. Vikings: Valhalla

New on Netflix, Vikings: Vahalla is a sequel to the famous historical Vikings series, which premiered back in 2013. The new sequel is set one hundred years in the Vikings’ universe future. It stars Sam Corlett, Frida Gustavsson, Leo Suter, Bradley Freegard, and Caroline Henderson.

3. Back To 15

If you are a lover of a telenovela, there are chances you’d like this Brazilian series debuting on Netflix on 25 February 2022. Back To 15 is a teen romantic comedy adapted from a famous novel of the same title. The protagonist, 30-year-old Anita, is fed up with her life, and she finds a way to go back in time but wakes up in the body of a 15 years old teenager. It stars Brazilian actors and actresses like Maisa Silva, Amanda Azevedo, Mariana Rois, Lucca Picon, and a host of others. Although the series is in Brazilian, it is subtitled in English for the non-Brazilian-speaking audience.

2. No Exit

No Exit is a new thriller on Hulu that follows a recovering drug addict named Darby and her journey to sobriety in a rehab facility. After receiving a call concerning her mother’s health condition, she escapes from the rehab facility and sets out to visit her, only to be caught in a series of life-threatening events; a blizzard, a kidnapping scheme, and more. No Exit is based on a 2017 novel by Taylor Adams and features Havana Rose in the lead role of Darby. Danny Ramirez, David Rysdahl, Dennis Haysbert, Dale Dickey, and Mila Harris also star in the movie.

1. Unintentional

Unintentional is a 2-hour long movie from RedTV — a lifestyle channel on YouTube. It marks the first feature film from the channel and was executively produced by Bola Atta and directed by Femi Bamigbetan. The rom-com movie tells the story of a jilted Seffi (played by Omowunmi Dada). She then embarks on a journey out of Lagos, alongside her best friend (Rosy) Beverly Osu, where they meet Uzor (played by Efe Iwara). One of the things that sets this rom-com apart from most other Nollywood big-screen romantic comedies is that it is set outside of the glamorous metropolitan city Lagos. The movie moves from Lagos where the first few scenes were shot and diverted to Owerri and Enugu, two of the major cities in Eastern Nigeria. Tina Mba and Frank Donga also star in it and you can watch it on YouTube right now.
