Monday Night Football: Danny Ings scores late as Southampton pull a comeback win against Brighton; Premier League Table

Brighton & Hove Albion continues in the shadows of a Premier League home win this term as Danny Ings scored a penalty awarded by VAR to snatch the winner in a 2-1 victory for Southampton on Monday Night Football.

Kyle Walker-Peters was tripped by Solly March right on the edge of the box while the game was at 1-1, the foul was initially awarded as a free-kick until VAR stepped in and it was awarded a penalty.

Ings who was introduced at half-time on his comeback from a knee injury stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake as the returning 2,000 home fans made known their frustration from the stands at VAR’s intervention.

Graham Potter’s men started like a house on fire and went ahead through Pascal Gross who stroked home from the penalty spot after James Ward-Prowse was penalized for handball.

Southampton despite a drab display managed to get a vital equaliser just before the break when Jannik Vestergaard brilliantly headed home a Ward-Prowse corner.

The win moves Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side into fifth place in the Premier League and they have now won 10 of their last 17 matches away from home.
