La Liga roundup: Villareal returns to winning ways as Real Madrid go top
The yellow submarines returned to winning ways against Levante on Saturday 2 January 2021. Villarreal goes fourth in La Liga thanks to a Fer Nino early goal and a Samuel Chukwueze assisted Moreno second goal.
Levante tried to fight their way back into the game but came up with just one goal. Sergio Leon halved the deficit in the 73rd minute.
Real Betis holds Sevilla
Sevilla drops to fifth after they fail to beat Real Betis in their La Liga clash on Saturday 2 January 2021. Looking at the results, one may think Betis was fortunate, it was actually the other way around.
Suso had opened the scoring for Sevilla in the 48th but Sergio Canales’ penalty levelled the game for Real Betis five minutes later.
The hosts came close to beating Sevilla when they were handed their second penalty in the 75th minute. But Nabil Fekir failed to convert and the game ended in a draw.
Sevilla still has two games in hand to turn their fortune around and still challenge for the La Liga title.
Real Madrid go top of La Liga
Real Madrid beat Celta Vigo 2-0 on Saturday 2 January 2021 to go top of La Liga. Lucas Vazquez scored in the 6th minute thanks to a Marco Asensio assist. In the second half, Vazquez returned the favour to double Los Blancos lead.

Real Madrid goes top of the league with one point above Atletico Madrid. However, Atletico Madrid has three games in hand and will likely return to the summit in no time.
Shaun Weissman scored for Real Valladolid in the only other La Liga match on Saturday to beat Getafe.
