La Liga Roundup: Costly mistake from Courtois nails Real Madrid to shock loss; Other results

Real Madrid were beaten 2-1 at home by Alaves in the La Liga Santander as Thibaut Courtois’s mistake proved really expensive, while Eden Hazard suffered more bad luck after getting injured yet again.

Hazard was substituted after just 28 minutes with a leg injury. The Belgian was making only his third league start of the season and fourth in all competitions.

Alaves took the lead from the spot via a fifth-minute penalty that Lucas Perez put past Courtois.

Joselu then made it two when he slotted into an open goal after keeper Thibaut Courtois’ bad pass, before Casemiro’s late consolation.

Real Madrid are now fourth on the table, six points behind Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid and two behind third-placed Valencia.

Sergio Ramos and striker Karim Benzema were sorely missed in defence and attack respectively as the host began without several of their key figures. Injuries to Dani Carvajal and Federico Valverde was another headache to contend with by Zinedine Zidane.

And now with three defeats, Real have lost as many times after 10 games this season as they did in 38 games in their 2019-20 title-winning campaign.

They will next travel to face Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday in their penultimate Champions League group match, where victory would seal progress to the last 16.
