Everton 2-1 Arsenal: The Toffees pile more pressure on Mikel Arteta after win at Goodison Park

Everton pile more misery on Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side with a 2-1 victory at Goodison Park and moved up to second in the Premier League table.

The Toffees took the lead when Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s flicked header from Alex Iwobi’s cross deflected off Rob Holding and into his own net, but Arsenal responded shortly to draw level via the penalty spot.

Nicolas Pepe converted the penalty after Tom Davies’ foul on Ainsley Maitland-Niles but it was Everton who went into half-time ahead thanks to Yerry Mina’s near-post header.

Arsenal came closest in a very drab affair in the second half through David Luiz who hit the woodwork with a deflected effort after Jordan Pickford had fumbled a cross.

Carlo Ancelotti and Arteta were appointed managers of Everton and Arsenal respectively a year ago and their seasons continue to go in opposite directions as Everton’s third straight win leaves them second to Merseyside rivals Liverpool till the weekend games are complete at least.

Arsenal, who were “so short of quality in every department” according to Sky Sports’ Jamie Redknapp, see their rut continue.

They remain 15th on the table after managing just 14 points from 14 games, losing five of their last seven in the Premier League.

  • Everton have won two of their last three home league games against Arsenal, as many as in their previous 11 against them at Goodison Park.
