Europa League: Wolves made to rue lost penalty, Shakhtar Donetsk hammer FC Basel

Spanish side, Sevilla, have qualified for the semi-final of the Europa League after scoring a late goal by Lucas Ocampos, who headed home following a superb cross from Ever Banega, to knock out Wolverhampton Wanderers from the competition.

Wolves were left to rue a missed penalty from Raul Jimenez, and failed to create any more chance during the match as Sevilla scored late in the game to secure qualification in the one-legged tie.

The English side had the perfect opportunity to take the lead from the penalty spot in their first European quarter-final since 1972, after Adama Traore’s dazzling run inside the first 12 minutes of the game. However, Sevilla’s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou denied Raul Jimenez.

Replays, however, showed that the goalkeeper was slightly off his line and a Sevilla defender was encroaching when the kick was taken, but VAR didn’t order a retake.

One would assume that was a wake-up call for Sevilla as they took charge from then on, bossing possession and forcing Wolves to retreat for the majority of the game. Sevilla was however rewarded with just two minutes to play when Lucas Ocampos headed home following a superb cross from Ever Banega.

Wolves’ exciting season ended in a subdued manner and their recent loss of form, which saw them slip and finish seventh in the Premier League could as well be attributed to their loss as it’s not enough for European qualification.

Sevilla, who have won the competition of five occasions, are unbeaten in 19 games in all competitions. They will face Manchester United in Dusseldorf on Sunday. The winner would face the winner between Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk in the final.
