European and Spanish giants Real Madrid were sent crashing out of the Copa del Rey last 32 after tasting defeat from third division outfit Alcoyano on Wednesday night.
The Spanish giant took the lead through defender Eder Militao but Alcoyano’s Jose Solbes pulled them level before taking the tie to extra time.
Alcoyano, a Segunda Division B side had their player Ramon Lopez sent off for a second booking but that didn’t matter as they earned a famous win when Juanan stole in at the near post.
“I take responsibility and whatever has to happen will happen,” Zidane said.
Zidane is under pressure and with the disappointing loss on Wednesday, many Spanish outfits still wonder why he has the job. Madrid is four points behind La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid – who have two games in hand.
Real who have won the Copa del Rey 19 times have not lifted in the last seven years and have only won it twice since 1993.
Incredibly, this is the fifth time a team from the third tier has eliminated them since 2001.
Zinedine Zidane made nine changes from the team who lost to Athletic Bilbao in the Super Cup with captain Sergio Ramos left out of the matchday squad but the team that finished against Alcoyano still contained Karim Benzema, Eden Hazard, Marcelo, Casemiro and Toni Kroos.
It remains to be seen what Zidane’s fate is following this defeat.
Too bad
