Popular Nigerian actress Iyabo Ojo recounted her rape experiences in a recent video on her YouTube page Iyabo Ojo Vlog.
Ojo said that she had suffered at the hands of rapists five different times with the first one happening when she was just 14 years old. Explaining why she had not opened up at the time, she said that she was afraid that she was going to be blamed for it.
“Then, it was a bit taboo. I felt I would be blamed for everything that happened. I opened the door for the person that did it. I allowed him to come in but I didn’t know that that was going to happen at the end of the day,” she said. Ojo added that the person both begged and threatened her and even kept coming back to say that he did it because he loved her.

She said she ran away from home because of the second rape incident and even after she was found, she didn’t let the cat out of the bag. Meanwhile, the third incident happened when she was 18 and was perpetrated by a friend of her first boyfriend who even threatened her with a knife and beat her up.
The actress mentioned that she was also raped by armed robbers after she was married and had her two kids around early 2004.
“Rape is never an easy thing. No matter how many times you try to talk about it, when you think about it, it is never okay. No matter how many times you think you have overcome it, rape is never a joke,” she told her listeners. “But it is okay to talk about it,” she added.
Iyabo Ojo went on to explain that her rape experiences caused her post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and years of health issues that still continue up until now. She believes that sharing her story will encourage more people to come forward and strengthen those who choose to deal with it silently.
