Canada, Mexico, US to host 2026 World Cup

In 8 years’ time, Canada, Mexico and the United States of America will come together to host the biggest sporting event in the world: The FIFA World Cup.

It will be the first time that the event is being hosted by 3 countries at the same time. The unified bid was announced in April 2017 but was finally approved on Wednesday when votes were cast at the 68th FIFA Congress.

CNN reports that soon after the result was announced, President Trump tweeted: “The U.S., together with Mexico and Canada, just got the World Cup. Congratulations – a great deal of hard work!”

The US soccer president Carlos Cordeiro who was very pleased told the FIFA Congress: “It’s a bit emotional for us today. Thank you so, so very much for this incredible honour.

“Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

“The beautiful game transcends borders and cultures. Football today is the only victor and in that spirit, we wish all Russian hosts and all the teams competing here the very best of luck.”

The US last hosted the world cup in 1994 while Mexico did in 1986. Canada however, has never hosted the FIFA world cup but has hosted a few FIFA tournaments such as the 1987 FIFA U-16 World Championship and the 2002 FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship amongst others.
