Burna Boy was celebrated for his Grammy award win with a homecoming concert in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria and he got a king’s welcome. Additionally, Governor Nyesom Wike promised to give all artists that performed at the concert N10 million each.
When news that Burna, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, was returning to the country following his Grammy win, the people and government of Port Harcourt organised a celebratory concert for him. They had pulled all stops to make him feel welcome. Young fans even gathered at the international airport in the state to welcome him.
The crowd inside the airport were far lesser than those outside waiting for the Afrobeats superstar who started making music in Rivers State before moving to Lagos State.
They also cheered him along in his ‘victorious’ entrance that will make even a real-life war hero proud of his achievements.
The homecoming concert eventually took place at the EUI Event Centre Sani Abacha Road GRA, Port Harcourt. Other Nigerian superstars who came from the city such as Duncan Mighty, Timaya, Omah Lay, and Nissi performed alongside Burna Boy to thrill the crowd gathered.
However, before the concert, Governor Nyesom Wike hosted the singer and his parents at the government house. “There is no Rivers person that will say he or she is not happy with the kind of pride you’ve brought us,” Wike told Burna Boy. “I am very happy and I can tell you, whatever you think we can do to promote you, we will continue to do it.”
He also added that it was their duty to show him their love and further urged the hitmaker to continue making record-breaking songs. In response, Ogulu told the governor that this is ‘probably the biggest honour that will be bestowed on [him] since [he] was born’.
“It is one thing to win the Grammy and to be applauded everywhere else in the world and another thing to be loved in your own home and that to me is worth more than anything I can get,” he said.
To further show his appreciation for the event, Wike promised to give N10 million to all the other artists that performed at the Burna Boy homecoming concert, that is; Duncan Mighty, Timaya, Omah Lay, and Nissi.
