BBC World recently had a chat with the creator Nnedi Okorafor, PhD on the comic development.
The author revealed that the main character she created – Ngozi – was a normal teenager living in Lagos, whose life suddenly changed following an encounter with a grasshopper. The writer also revealed that the image of the character was based on a picture of one of the unfortunate Chibok girls that were abducted from their boarding school by Boko haram insurgents in northern Nigerian.
On settling the story in Lagos, she said, that Lagos was the right place to set the story. The city is “Awesome and full of life and vibrancy and adventure and story.” Setting the story in Lagos, she said is “Practically right in itself”.
