It’s that time of the week, when we have some time to ourselves to do whatever we so desire. For most, the weekend is a time to relax from the long week, and what better way to do that than enjoy premium entertainment?
Whether by yourself or with loved ones, indoor or at the cinemas, we have compiled yet again a variety of new films and TV series you can treat yourself to this weekend.
1. Black Widow
After over a year delay due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the 24th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally out. Black Widow had its cinema premiere on 9 July. It is also showing on Disney+ with Premier Access. The film, set after the events of “Captain America: Civil War (2016)”, follows the story of Romanoff on the run as she is forced to confront a conspiracy tied to her past. It stars Scarlett Johansson, Rachel Weisz, and Florence Pugh, to mention a few.
2. How I became A Superhero
In a world where humans and superheroes coexist, a lone wolf cop teams up with a brilliant detective to dismantle a dark organisation trafficking superpowers. The film had its initial release in France on 21 April, and debuted on streaming platform Netflix last weekend. You can enjoy this one from the comfort of your home. Though a French flick, Netflix’s subtitle option makes it watchable for everyone.

3. The White Lotus
“The White Lotus” is an American satire comedy television miniseries created, written and directed by Mike White. It follows the vacations of various hotel guests over the span of a week as they relax and rejuvenate in paradise. But with each passing day, a darker complexity emerges in these picture-perfect travellers, the hotel’s cheerful employees and the idyllic locale itself. The series premiered on HBO on July 11, 2021.
4. Gunpowder Milkshake
“Gunpowder Milkshake” is an action thriller film that follows the story of a young assassin who must team up with her mother and her former sidekicks in order to save an eight-year-old girl. It was released digitally in the United States on 14 July 2021 on Netflix with a simultaneous limited theatrical release. The film features an ensemble cast of Lena Headey, Carla Gugino, Angela Bassett, and Paul Giamatti, among others.
5. Loki (Season finale)
Watching a series one episode per week can be exhausting. The long wait for the next episode in itself is something that discourages a lot of viewers. This is why now is the best time to enjoy the first season of the “Loki” series, as its finale aired on 14 July. In other words, you can now binge-watch the complete season in a sitting. Loki is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and follows the story of an alternate version of Loki, who has created a new timeline. The series is streaming on Disney+.

6. Die in a Gunfight
“Die in a Gunfight” is an American romantic crime film said to be an updated version of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. It follows the story of Ben, a rebellious young man, who falls in love with Mary, the daughter of his father’s enemy, starting a battle full of love, lust, revenge and betrayal. Die in a gunfight stars Diego Boneta, Alexandra Daddario, and Travis Fimmel. It comes out in US cinemas and VOD today, 16 July.
7. Space Jam: A New Legacy
“Space Jam: A New Legacy” is a 2021 American live-action/animated sports comedy film. It is a sequel to the famed 1996 film “Space Jam”. The film stars basketball phenomenon LeBron James as a fictionalized version of himself, alongside Don Cheadle, Khris Davis, and Sonequa Martin-Green in live-action roles. It also stars Zendaya and Eric Bauza as voice over actors. It premieres today 16 July, both in cinemas and on HBO Max.
8. Out of Death
If action thrillers are your cup of tea, “Out of Death” is the film for you this weekend. It is an action thriller starring Bruce Willis and Jaime King. It follows retired cop Jack Harris who has to protect his niece from corrupt cops and criminals after taking a picture of one of them killing one of the dealers. The film debuts in the cinema today, 16 July.
9. Fear Street Part III: 1666
Lovers of horror flicks may already be familiar with this one. The Netflix film has been released in parts week by week for two weeks now. “Fear Street Part Three: 1666” is an American supernatural horror film and the final instalment of the Fear Street trilogy after Part One: 1994 and Part Two: 1978. This instalment looks to answer the questions about the events that started the whole drama. It premieres on Netflix today, 16 July 2021.

10. Pig
Nicholas Cage is back on the big screens and this time he appears as the lead character, Rob, a truffle hunter in the Oregon wilderness who returns to his hometown of Portland to find his stolen pig. That is quite a story, isn’t it? The film has received high praise, both for its story and Cage’s performance. Pig comes out in cinemas today 16 July and also stars Alex Wolff and Adam Arkin in supporting roles.
