AMAA 2019: Winners at African’s most prestigious film award [Full list]

At the 15th African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA 2019), it was a night of glamour and excitement as the who is who in the African film industry gather to honour excellence in filmmaking among African filmmakers and professionals in the industry.

The venue was the Landmark Event Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria. The hosts for the event were filmmaker c-m actress Lara Akindoju, radio presenter Lorenzo Menakaya and comedian Funny Bone.

Previously, AMAA organisers had announced in a live event, the list of nominees for this year’s awards. You can find the full list here.

In addition, we covered everything that happened in the buildup to AMAA 2019 extravaganza, which held on Sunday night. Th highlights of which, is to reveal the winners of this year’s awards.

In total, 26 awards were up for grabs, with the best as adjudged by the jury, emerging winners.

So, here they are, the winners at the 2019 African Movie Academy Awards:

  1. Best Short Animation –  Choices (Nigeria)
  2. Best Documentary – Khartoum Offside (Sudan)
  3. Best Film in African language – Rafiki (Kenya)
  4. Best Film by an African-born Director – Julius Amedume – Rattlesnakes
  5. Best Diaspora Short Film – Bail (UK)
  6. Best Short Film – A Tune of Kora (Senngal)
  7. Best Diaspora Documentary – My Friend Fela (Brazil)
  8. Best Diaspora Narrative Feature – Hero (Trinidad and Tobago/Canada)
  9. Best Achievement in Production Design – Redemption (Mozambique)
  10. Best Achievement in Costume Design – Mercy of the Jungle (Rwanda)
  11. Best Achievement in Make-Up – Mercy of the Jungle (Rwanda)
  12. Best Achievement in Soundtrack – Mabata Bata (Mozambique)
  13. Best Achievement in Visual Effects – The Delivery Boys (Nigeria)
  14. Best Achievement sound – Sew The Winter In My Skin (South Africa)
  15. National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) award for Best Nigerian Film – King of Boys
  16. Best cinematography – Sew the Winter to My Skin (South Africa)
  17. Best Achievement in Editing Rafiki (Kenya)
  18. Best Achievement in Screenplay –  Redemption, (Mozambique)
  19. Best Young/Promising Actor; Cynthia Dankwa (Esi) Burial of Kojo (Ghana)
  20. Best Actress in a Supporting Role – Adesua Etomi-Wellington; King of Boys (Nigeria)
  21. Best Actress in a Leading Role – Sola Sobowale (Eniola); King of Boys (Nigeria)
  22. Best actor in a Supporting role – Jarrid Geduld (Abie) Ellen, The Ellen Parkies Story (South Africa)
  23. Best Actor in a Leading Role – Marc Zinga; Mercy of the jungle (Rwanda)
  24. Best Director for First Feature film – Blitz Bazawule: The Burial Of Kojo (Ghana)
  25. Best Director – Jahmi X.T Qubeka; Sew the Winter to My Skin (South Africa)
  26. Best Film – Mercy of the Jungle (Rwanda) (Rwanda)
