Early life and background

Wittek was born in Staten Island, New York, where he attended Susan E. Wagner High School. He grew up in a rough neighbourhood and, as a teenager, made money by working at local barbershops and selling drugs. Wittek continued selling drugs after relocating to Miami, Florida. He was eventually arrested in 2011 for possession of a controlled substance and illegal drug trafficking. The charges were, however, dismissed for lack of a search warrant. Afterwards, he moved to Los Angeles, planning to buy mar_j_ana in bulk and mail it back to New York City.

Wittek started his YouTube account in 2011, but first became known for the Tumblr account he started in 2012, known as “Behind the Cuts”. As far back as then, he had been styling the hair of celebrities like Mac Miller and Pauly D. Wittek’s fame increased after his 2014 move to 1600 Vine, a Hollywood apartment building known for housing internet celebrities like Jake Paul and Lele Pons. There he met David Dobrik through another Vlog Squad member, Toddy Smith.

Vlog Squad members – David Dobrik

The Vlog Squad is a group featuring an ensemble cast of YouTubers who are friends of creator David Dobrik. Generally, people considered part of the Vlog Squad include Jason Nash, Natalie Mariduena, Josh Peck, Zane Hijazi, Heath Hussar, Mariah Amato, Scotty Sire, Ilya Fedorovich, Nick Antonyan and his siblings Vardan and Suzy, Matt King, Toddy Smith, Corinna Kopf, Jeff Wittek, Joe Vulpis, Carly Incontro and Erin Gilfoy. Members of the squad feature in Dobrik’s videos in a recurring manner. Because the cast of the vlogs samples Dobrik’s larger friend group, membership rotates on an ongoing basis. The group won the award of Ensemble Cast at the 2019 Streamy Awards.

During Wittek’s time filming with the Vlog Squad, David Dobrik encouraged him to release his mugshot and make his former criminal activity part of his online persona. During his time with the squad, he started filming episodes for his online talk show Jeff’s Barbershop. From there, he gained enough popularity to become a brand ambassador for Old Spice.

Jeff Wittek accident (Jeff Wittek eye)

In June 2020, Wittek was badly injured in Utah while filming a stunt with David Dobrik and the Vlog Squad. Dobrik was illegally operating an excavator in a shallow lake while Wittek swung from a rope attached to the end of the excavator’s arm; when the excavator stopped, Wittek collided with the arm and fell. His skull was fractured in nine places, his left eye socket was fractured, his hip and foot were broken, and ligaments in his leg were torn. Wittek continued to regularly film his Jeff’s Barbershop series without addressing the injuries.

Don’t Try This At Home

Don’t Try This at Home is a docuseries released by Jeff in April of 2021. The docuseries had been in the works for several months following Jeff’s accident and his fans widely anticipated it. The series comprised five episodes in which Wittek explained the circumstances surrounding the injury. He described life in recovery from a near-fatal accident, and also spoke about how the incident affected his relationship with Dobrik. After the first episode of the docuseries was released, Wittek had to move to Patreon because the footage of his injuries was deemed too graphic for YouTube.

Cierra Ramirez and Jeff Wittek

Jeff Wittek dated Cierra Alexa Ramirez for a couple of years before the two went separate ways. They were well known together during their relationship.
