The Super Eagles of Nigeria‘s dream of winning a fourth AFCON title at the ongoing tournament in Egypt was dashed after they were beaten 2-1 by Algeria.
Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez scored a sensational stoppage-time winner to fire Algeria to their first Africa Cup of Nations Final since 1990.
Algeria had earlier scored the first goal with 5 minutes left of the first half took the lead with Riyad Mahrez having a hand in the opener. The Manchester City winger teased in a dangerous cross towards Boundjah, and thanks to two fortuitous deflections, William Troost-Ekong bundled the ball into his own goal.
Nigeria equalized in the 72 minutes of the second half. A fierce shot hit the arm of Aissa Mandi, and after a quick VAR aided review, a penalty was given, which was converted by Ighalo.
With the contest looking to enter extra time, the Manchester City forward Mahrez whipped a fierce set-piece into the top corner to seal the Super Eagles’ fate.
Algeria will face Senegal, who had earlier beaten Tunisia thanks to an extra-time own goal, in the final on Friday.
