The Headies 2019 nominees’ list is out!
23 awards plus a special recognition award for former PSquare member – Paul Okoye – is out for grabs.
According to the organisers’ of the event, works produced between January 2018 and June 2019 are eligible for nominations. The award show would take place on the 19th of October 2019.
In the frontline for awards is Burna Boy, who garnered eight nominations including nominations for Artist of the Year, Headies Viewers’ Choice, Best Music Video, Album of the Year and Best R&B/Pop Album. Burna Boy’s hit single Ye was nominated in three categories, viz: Recording of the Year, Best Pop Single and Song of the Year.
Some might argue that Burna Boy has 10 nominations because two works by his producers – Phantom producer for Ye and Kel-P Vibes producer for Killing Dem – are nominated in the Best Producer category.
Whether eight or 10, Burna Boy sets a record as the most nominated artist in Headies history as he beat the seven nominations record set by Wizkid in 2015.
Also in the running for the Artist of the Year crown are Wizkid (four nominations), Davido (three nominations in total), Tiwa Savage (three nominations and Falz (six nominations)
Along with Burna Boy’s Ye, Nigerians seem to have loved the following songs, which are all nominated for the Song of the Year award: Wetin We Gain by Victor AD, Fake Love by Starboy ft Duncan Mighty, Wizkid, Case by Teni, Jealous by Fireboy DML and Baby by Joeboy.
Joining Burna Boy’s Dangote, are the following music videos vying for the Best Music Video award: Available – Patoranking, Ire’- Adekunle Gold, Talk – Falz and Jaiye – Ladipoe.
In the Rookies’ Category, are Crayon, Buju, Barry Jhay and Oxlade are all in contention.
South Africans – Master KG (Skeleton Moves) and DJ Maphoriza (iWalk Ye Phara) – Ivorien Afro B (Drogba), Kenyan Sauti Sol (Melanin) and Ghananian Promise (CCTV) are in the running for African Artist Recognition award.
The Headies Awards is in its 13th edition and it is organised by HipHop Magazine. It’s objective is to honour outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry for the period under review.
