The show, which is the streaming giant’s first African original series, stars Pearl Thusi and is set completely in South Africa.
‘Queen Sono’ follows Pearl Thusi’s titular character, who is “a highly trained top spy in a South African agency whose purpose is to better the lives of African citizens. While taking on her most dangerous mission yet, she must also face changing relationships in her personal life.”
A more detailed character description by Shadow and Act reads: “The cast also includes Vuyo Dabula playing Shandu, an ex-spy who has taken a different path, and Sechaba Morojele as Dr. Sid, director of the SOG. Chi Mhende, Loyiso Madinga and Rob Van Vuuren, play agents on his team.
“Kate Liquorish plays Ekaterina, heiress of an oligarch family with ulterior motives. Khathu Ramabulana plays Queen’s childhood friend, William, now in a relationship with Enhle Maphumulo’s Nova.
“Abigail Kubeka plays Mazet, Queen’s beloved Gogo, who has always supported Queen, no matter the trouble she gets herself into. Connie Chiume, Otto Nobela and James Ngcobo round out the cast.”
The streaming giant has acquired a number of films from the African continent, including Genevieve Nnaji’s Lionheart, and Senegalese filmmaker, Mati Diop’s Atlantics.
This is, however, the first film content developed completely on its own from scratch. ‘Queen Sono’ will be available on 28 February.
