The Lion King: The Gift is a gift that keeps on giving.
As Beyonce shared with fans behind the scenes of the making of the album, which the superstar singer describes as a “love letter to Africa.”
The less than an hour-long documentary special titled, Beyoncé Presents: Making The Gift, aired on Monday 16th September 2019 on America’s ABC.
In the documentary, Beyonce (full name Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter) shares footage of her family that includes husband, Jay-Z, older daughter Blue Ivy, who made her musical debut in one of the tracks – Brown Skin Girl, and twins Sir and Rumi.
The documentary opens up on a scene Carter’s family in Africa, with the children wearing bathing suits while Beyonce and Jay-Z read to them.
“Visiting countries in Africa, it’s always an emotional experience for me,” Beyoncé says in the scene. “It feels like I’m making peace with a part of me that’s yearning for my ancestral connection. I was blessed to be able to relive some of the experiences that I’ve been very fortunate to have over the years with my entire family.”
She adds: “Knowing where you come from, that’s what I want for my children.”
On one of the album’s most beloved song, Brown Skin Girl, which also features Nigeria’s Wizkid, Beyonce says in the documentary:
“When I see fathers singing Brown Skin Girl to their daughters, to know that my daughter can have the same opportunities and feel confident and feel like she doesn’t have to take her braids down and she can comb her afro out and she can glisten in her brown skin… That is why I make music.”
Lion King: The Gift is not the official tracklist for the Lion King reboot but rather was released separately from the project. The album features many well-known artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino and Pharrell Williams. It also includes many African artists including Tekno, Yemi Alade, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Moonchild Sanelly, Shatta Wale, Burna Boy and Mr Eazi and Busiswah.
